Please Help!

Hello everyone. I am going down to Chillocothe with my uncles, wild boar hunting. I've got a Marlin 512 Slugmaster. It's got a fully rifled barrel, rifle stock, bolt action. I am shooting Lightfield Commander IDS 3in magnums. 1800FPS with 3,400FTLBS energy. I was told that with this setup, I can kill anything in America withing 125 yards. Is it true? Thank you all...

I'm not a big fan of shooting slugs over 100 yards, but with the new stuff they're putting out these days, you should be more than capable of dropping a hog with the setup you described.

I killed a big boar last spring with my 870 with 3" Winchester rifled slugs through a modified choke. Worked just fine. Like with any other weapon, shot placement is what ultimately matters. Also, know your limitations in regards to range.

Hey Kentuck, was that a screw-in choke, cuz if it was, your shotgun should have blown up.

Hey Bigtusker i have shot my 870 with modified screw in choke with no blowin up. I thought you could shoot slugs out of shotgun with screw in chokes as long as you didnt use full choke? Well let me know i thought it wasnt a problem to shoot slugs with a barrel that has screw in chokes.

It was a screw in choke and in checking out some shotgun sites some say you can shoot them out ic/mod/fc without much difference in accuracy. I always thought IC would be best. I checked at a local gun shop and they told me the mod would be fine. Going on a whitetail hunt on the 10th on Fort Knox in KY that is slug only. Fixed any questions about chokes though, go me a rifled barrel!

Old wives tale that slugs are unsafe with screw in chokes. I still would not shoot one with a full choke. Federal is making a new saboted slug specifically designed for greater accuracy from smoothbores. Might be worth a look.

Is the new sabot suppose to be more accurate? Because a sabots design is the plastic sabot interlocks with the grooves on a rifle barrel, and whether its saboted or not.. in a smoothebore, it wouldn't make a difference. Unless they made then to expand to fit tighter in the barrel? But, you can shoot slugs through screw in chokes, but sometimes the choke tube will fuse in with the threads of the barrel.. But, it won't blow up unless you're using like a super full turkey choke.. Even then it probably still wouldn't blow up... Probably just warp the barrel..

Dont know what choke he had in but a buddy of mine had a slug in his pouch and didnt realize it when he was bird hunting. It blew the end of his barrell all apart.

Federal calls it the Tru-Ball slug and it come in their Vital Shock line. It's a rifled slug with a sabot for a smoothbore. It is a new product. Their website claims a 75% increase in accuracy and 2" groups at 50 yards. I just happened to see it on TV. Not sure exactly how it works, just reporting what I found.

Thats cool.. there are a lot of smoothebore slug hunters in Ohio.. so the Tru Ball will help them out alot!.. cool
