Here's an idea: DON'T SHOOT THE DAMN THINGS WHERE THE POISON OAK IS!!!!! I did warn you. I did. Really, I did. I've been in there. It's nasty. I don't care who you are; it's a lousy spot for recovery; and that's if you're sensible and go around from the bottom instead of DIVING OFF THE TOP. (Were you a marine?)

No, I wasn't Marine, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once! Does that count?

Yes I know you warned me. I had spring fever, the hog was just...standing there. It was so pretty, it postively screamed shoot me.

Interesting experiment happening now. COMNAVHOUSEPAC (commander, navy house pacific aka "the wife") wanted bacon. 'Course, I explained that the wild hog flanks aren't really thick enough for that. She countered with "try it, we'll use it for bacon bits."

You know, she's good...I'd never have thought of that. I'll let you good folks know how it comes out.

Anyone know where I can get the head beetled? High Desert skull works isn't taking any work.

I get poison oak a lot unfortunately - it's no fun. The best treatment I can recommend when you get it is to turn the shower up as hot as you can possibly tolerate and spray the affected sites with the water. Be careful not to scald, but the hotter the better. Gives you the same blissful feeling like you're scratching it, but then the itch disappears for several hours. I do it a few times a day.

I probably would have shot it too.

The base is now closed to all outdoor activities for the foreseeable future due to the increased defensive posture dictated by recent events in the middle east. In other words: Bin Laden is DEAD so we can't go hunting! I guess that's a reasonable tradeoff.

I guess this could be a good thing, give the pigs some time to reproduce so we can go get them in the fall!

Andy I have always washed with Castle soap within three hours or as long as six hours after realizing I have been exposed and have never had a breakout...

I love the stories. I recently went on my first "hunting trip" and it was quite an experience. It's usually just a local spot for a few hours. The moment when you can pass on a hog between three guys shows you've really enjoyed your time.

Now...as a poison oak veteran victim I can tell you something you won't read or hear about. The most important thing you can do now that you've already got it is DON'T SCRATCH IT! Scratching your skin in it's irritated state will cause it to rupture and swell with goo. When you really have to take care of the itch, just lightly sweep your fingers over the area barely touching the skin. It will give some relief.

Any touching will spread the infection. For soap I used Fels naptha but I really don't want poison oak again.

Lt Dan I must tell you that I know exactly what you are going through. I swear I must be allergic to it or something because I don't even need to touch it and I'll get it everywhere. I have got the Rx cream from the doc and it helps but must best advice is keep covered, wash ASAP, and cream up. Usually I will wash with some sort of special foam/soap at least 3 times within 12 hours of getting home. May be a little over kill but when ever I get it, it spreads like crazy.

Wow, what I do goe's against everything everybody else is doing, first off I lived in poisan oak/ivy woods for 40 yrs and never got it....then at 50 yrs old BAM, if I think about it it seems to erupt, also I can pick it up from clothes that I haven't worn for 6 months after hunting not to mention the cat and dog, anyhow, the eruptions will travel all over your body so when it come's I take antihistimines and bust open the eruptions and clean them out with alcohol or Hydogen peroxide until they bleed then put technu on and wait for the next eruption and repeat, its mildly painful to clean them out but they basically stop itching until the next spot opens up, also I take Adrenal complex supplements to boost my immune system, it used to take 2 weeks for it to leave my system but now its less then a week, my doctor says that as you get older the infections get easier to get and there is no known way (according to him ) to immunize yourself from infection.

Almost....almost. Still can't figure how I got it on my inner thighs though. Only thing I can think was when we washed the clothes the next day, and before the evening hunt, that there was some residual left on the pants and the washing pushed it around.

'Course the wife jokingly suggested I visit a better class house of ill repute, LOL. She was suprised I'd not got PO before.

You know, it's even worse when your hunting partner is NOT allergic and proceeds to kill something deep in the back 40 that just HAS to be retrieved by two people....... I've pushed through the damn stuff with my forearms in front of my face to keep it out of my eyes. That's gonna come back to haunt you. But like the guy said: nothing worse than getting it on your junk.

I get poison oak two or three times a year. My Dr. keeps me stocked with cream.it's quite itchy but nothing compared to getting bit by a bird mite.Wait until that happens you'll be happy to have the poison oak.

Naah, I sent it to phillip. I've hunted with him a time or two. That guy kicks my butt in the field. When I'm blowing chunks, he's not even breathing hard.
