Burning poison oak is akin to suicide.
Oils from the plant enter the lungs and you think it's bad when you get it on your boys you ain't seen nothin!
You'll be doing serious hospital time if you breath the smoke from burning Poison Oak.

And you can get it from animals licking after they eat it so don't let the goats lick ya. My dad's family found a female fawn. As a young doe it would like to lick people like a dog would. It also liked to eat poison oak. So, more than one person got licked by poison oak back when.....lol

Anyway, no laughing matter....I hope you get over the stuff soon

....the only native remedy I heard of was using a soapy bulb from a plant I don't know the name of to wash. The bulb was also used to poison fish by the maidu's since it coats a fish's gills--they belly up for good eatin' soon afterwards. I don't know if it works or not but that's what I heard back when...wash up with that bulb if you didn't have soap after tromping through the poison oak. Anyway, the plant kind of looks like a wild iris but without the flowers. And it does create a lot of soap that can be used to wash up. The bulb is contained in a "husk" like fibrous material that looks exactly like the insides of a coconut husk...all stringy brown fibers encasing the bulb.

I don't get the poison oak rash, but this is what my dad does:

Scrubs hard with soapy water, dries it off real well, and then sprays it with hairspray (the old fashioned kind with alcohol). And he says it first exposes the area, and then the hairspray seals it from air to help the itch, and the alcohol in the hairspray dries up the oils.

I don't know, but he thinks it works.

I am almost over my bout of it for the 12 days. I started taking Prednazone (oral steroid) as soon as I got home from Choppers last 28th- and kept putting Ivy Stat on it.

I was able to ward off it's migration to the homestead.
<
But I bloated like a dead calf and got sunburned to snot. I now have oozing welts on leggs and arms where I was bitten from horseflys in the desart last weekend.

The best part about gettting it- If you are not in the mood- neither is the wife.

I run with a drinking club java script:emoticon(':toast-yellow:')
smilie about 5 times a week through the stuff in So Cal. I've seen it all!
The key is stay away! If not possible, use Technu BEFORE and after, and then strip your clothes off. Wash yourself/dog with rubbing alcohol, simple green, or dish soap (strong oil cutters).
One last thought, I know the Doc said it does not spread, but I swear it can if bad enough so be careful.

I've had a native american remedy, something to do with summer time mistletoe mixed into a paste, I'll try to find the recipe.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a hunt coming up in June with Tom Willoughby, anybody know if there is a bunch of poison oak on his ranch or of someone who has gotten poison oak while hunting with Tom?

I was hunting on a ranch with a friend of mine. The place had a healthy population of poison oak. I didn't have a good sense of what it looked like, but my friend was very good about pointing it out to me. Just about anything resembling the stuff got avoided for the rest of the day. I was sure hoping I wouldn't have to worry about it while hunting with Willoughby.

I have never hunted with him or seen his ranch but if I remember correctly it is in Central CA right? I would say you have about 100% chance of poison oak on the ranch, hopefully he'll know where it is thickest and avoid it.

Ya, but that doesn't mean the pigs avoid it.

In fact, it seems that if they have some run left in them after getting shot they'll always go for the thickest, nastiest pile of poison oak to hole up in and croak.

Just remember: "Leaf of three, leave it be". Also remember PO has shiny leaves compared to fuzzy bramble leaves.
It's easy to spot under oak trees, because there's only a couple of plants that can really thrive under them. In the summer, the leaves will turn bright red.

Mebbe I should go out to the back part of my property to take some pix of the stuff.

Just got done rolling in it at choppers. I used to be highly allergic to poisin ivy back in MO but now I just get a lil bit on my finger for a few days and it's gone with the poison oak here in Ca.

This trip I got a little on my forehead. Visions of the elelphant man and maybe plastic surgery when I first saw it in the mirror but it's gone down already.

I used to have to get the shots every summer, man that was bad news. Miserable for at least a week in the hot summer. Yuck

I have bad allergic reactions with poison oak and I mean really bad. I can smell poison oaks a mile away. My childrens will not recognize me when my face swells up and in most cases, it always begin around my eyes. They would said that I look like Freddy Cougar! The slightlest wind driven oil will cause me to swell up. I cannot even take a dip in the cool streams during the hot august hunt in A zone. However I have overcome this handicap of mine.... what I do is order a years supply of Prednisone (mexico & canada) and whenever I go out ot the woods (lower elevation) I would pop 2 pills and I can walk through patches of poison oak without having any reactions. By the time I get my prescriptions from the doctor it is too late.
I've been poison oak free for the past 3 years since Prednisone. I won't leave home without it!

Remember the saying..in regards to the number of leaves you see on a plant.

"IF IT'S GOT THREE...LET IT BE!!"

I've never seen so much poison oak as this year. It's everywhere!!

I've got it now.
It's not too bad because I used Tecnu about 4 hours after exposure.

Tec LAbs has a new product out called Tecnu Extreme. The sales rep says it works if you've already got the rash. It may be a few weeks until this hits the stores.

We're going to add the TecNu and other Tec LAbs products to the JHO Store since they are recommended by many who have dealt with the poison oak.

More info on Tecnu

I got it at Choppers, dragging Hogzilla JR thru the oak. It started off real mellow with just a few spots on my arms early last week, but here I am almost 2 weeks later and its spreading like wild-fire!!!!!!

And no, ass slinger, I haven't been back in the woods or to your favorite gay bar.

HELP, Zimm

PS: Doc visit for a shot a no-can-do...needle phobia. I am hoping someone can give a remedy I can get on-line from Mex or something.

Oral prednezone will help. I have a prescription (the wifes actually since she is super allergic) that is a steroid cream. I used it after choppers when I started to break out and it did a great job of stopping itching and minimizing the break out. Sorry, can't remember the name. Short of prescription stuff, take benadryl, soak in an oatmeal type bath, you can buy it at Walgreens. Also the pink cream you can put on, I forget the name but it works OK. No cure man, just try to manage the itching. Oh, and keep it in your pants next time
