Hey all,

I'm working on my full report from the POR, and will post it on my website with a link here. In the meantime, I'll kick it off with some highlights of my hunt...

First of all, it was AWESOME to be able to put some faces with the names of these guys I've been chatting with for so long. Unfortunately, I met most of them in the dark on Friday night, and probably still haven't managed to match all the names to faces. There were a BUNCH of JHPers there.

I did meet god, Jesse (the god of the JHP multiverse anyway) ... and he looks amazingly like his avatar. OK, well not really. His hair is longer and he has a beard.

Grtwythunter and I have hunted before, including last year's POR. We partnered up for this hunt too. I can't find enough good things to say about this guy. If he hadn't been around, I'd still be dragging my pig out of that hellhole. Conveniently enough, I always shoot my pig and leave before he shoots his, so he helps me drag, and then I'm not there to help him.

Yes, I did get a pig. Shot a sow that weighed in at 178 field dressed. That's a personal best for me, and I was pretty tickled once the work was done. But man, dragging her out I was thinking I should've shot a piglet instead.

A few of the other guys got pigs too, but I can't remember who did and who didn't. They'll have to post their own stories when they get back. When I left, Jesse, Grtwythunter, and several others were heading back up to the ridges for a last ditch effort.

The storm made the roads a mess, and there are several adventures related to that too. I'll have more details on my own adventure (and hopefully pictures if they come out.. Scott?) with the full story. Let's just say that if you're going to Tejon during the wet season, consider a short wheel-base vehicle, super aggressive tires (and/or chains), and a winch. Trust me on this one.

Good job on the hog, sounds like there should be some good stories starting to surface over the next few days, I can't wait.

Well....I made it home about 8pm last night. A hot shower and soft bed did wonders for me.

I didn't manage a pig but only because I wanted to get off the ridge in one piece. It started raining harder than we'd seen all weekend shortly after Jesse and I got up there. I was on some pigs and had a shot, but vivid pictures of a certain silver Dodge pickup hanging over a cliff started dancing through my head. So I conceded defeat and hoofed it back to my truck. Jesse had already wised up too and was headed down the mountian. I caught up with him and we chained our trucks up and slid the rest of the way down.

I'll get the pictures of Roadmisser...oops...I mean Speckmisser's near 5-1/2 gainer over the side developed today and post them up.

All in all I had a great time. Got to meet lots of JHP'ers and catch up on things with those I have already met. The only reason I am pigless was I couldn't close the deal. Saw lots of pigs, missed one Saturday, and blew a couple of other chances. Can't wait to go back and settle the score.

A bit of advice if your'e new to Tejon....don't try a "easier" way back to camp in the dark without a GPS. Speckmisser and I did and by the time I got frustrated and got my GPS and maps out we were so far off it wasn't funny(OK, it is now) Anyways, we got back in camp around 1:30a.m.

Sunday morning a huge mountain lion ran across the road as I headed out. I swear when that kitty's nose crossed the center line of the road the tip of his tail was still was still hanging over the dirt shoulder.
Unfortunately my truck wasn't fast enough to help him out of the road, but I gave him a good chase for about 40 yards

Hope next year's all JHP Pig o Rama becomes a reality and I can meet up with even more of you great people!

I also made it back in one piece. Hunted with Evan III the whole weekend. I had a blast out there even though I came back pigless. Saw lots of dead pigs hanging off gambrels. Didn't see any pigs the whole weekend until sunday morning when Evan and I hiked up a hill. We jumped a fat sow with 6 piglets.

Everyone kept telling us about the herds of 20, 30, 40 pigs they saw. We must have been blind or something. We took some nasty hikes and managed to get out. No pigs unfortunately. We did get stuck on a road off the main road on saturday in my truck. We slid into a nasty rut. Called Don Geivet and he never came out. We got outta there 2 hours later. Not as bad as Roadmisser...I mean Speckmisser did. Saw ton of deer and ground squirrels, cattle too. We were also on the same ridge grtwythunter and Jesse were on. Evan and I got pretty nervous up there since we have never been on that ridge. Well a storm came in quick with heavy rain, snow, and hail. Luckily, some hunters came along and guided us out of there. Boy did I have a change in mind, if ya know what I mean....Evan III

I think the majority of the JHPers got pigs. They can tell their stories.

When I was there, didn't think about going back there since I didn't get a pig. Kinda like Vegas ya know. Keep going back thinking you'll make your money back. I'd probably be up for a JHP POR though.

Scott, glad to hear that you and Jesse made the right decision. As we were pulling out around 4pm, it started dumping, and all I could think about was the two of you up on that mountain. It was killing me to leave early. Now, I see that it was the right decision.

I saw 50+ pigs on Friday, and passed on two opportunities in hopes of finding a big boar. I never saw another pig on Saturday or Sunday. Our camp ended up 4 for 11. Not great, but considering the rain and fog, not too bad.

To those of you that got pigs. Congratulations. You earned it!

To those of you that I was fortunate enough to meet for the first time, IT WAS A PLEASURE. (Evan, the Bishops, Floattuber, Pit Dog, PaulC, Jesse, Little Tex, Dilpro, FF&F, SoGoHuntin, and...I don't remember. Jesse was spiking my Pepsi when I wasn't looking.) I really enjoyed the time around the campfire, although I only remember about half of it.

Speck and Scott, thanks for the help around camp. You guys are great.

Speck, you should have seen your truck from my perspective. I could see your oil pan from 1,000 feet below.

I'm starting to pucker just thinking about what that was like. Must have been real interesting actually experiencing it.

Man, it was bad enough from my own perspective. Have to get a new seatcover as it is, because the clench marks ripped the fabric.

Seriously, though... I've been in some ugly spots 4-wheeling before, but I have NEVER been that close to disaster. Thanks a ton to Mike and Ron for their help getting me out of there. I don't think they're on the list, so please pass along my gratitude.

Glad you're still with us. Mike and Ron were with me, but are not regular JHPers. I think they win the Good Sams Award. They rescued more than a few trucks. Mike just recently got that jeep and tricked it out for the trip. He was having a blast. Plus, he got a nice 186 lb. hog on Friday.

I'd just like to add something here. I think it was back in November or so when we had a JHP varmint hunt up at Carizzo Plains. The topic turned to the POR and EvanIII said that he was all about the March POR. I said something to the effect of "Well, we're supposed to get some El Nino rains" and EvanIII looks at me like I'm nutz and says, "What rains, I don't see no stinkin' rains!" I may squeal like a little girl when I see snakes, but still, "I told you so." hehehehe

Glad everybody got out safely.

I first wanted to say that I’m sure glad I made it to the POR in March. It was great to match faces with the handles of all the JHPers that were there. You were all a great bunch of guys, and very entertaining around the campfire. I arrived a little later than some on Friday. I got there around 1:00 in the afternoon. By 2:00 I had the Jeep equipped and ready to go. I headed down Beartrap canyon to go up on Geghis Ridge from the backside. After driving and glassing the hills for a couple of hours, I decided to walk down a ridge (near Geghis and Hunters ridge). I spotted one hog about a half mile out running across a grassy hill. As I continued on foot down this ridge, all I could see was fresh pig sign near heavy cover to my left. I ended up walking into a herd of about 30 deer ahead of me. I tried to keep from spooking them too much to use them to cover any sound I was making. When I was about a ¾ mile from the Jeep, I stopped and let all the deer go ahead. I was glassing the neighboring hillsides when I heard the distinct grunting of a pig behind me. When I turned, there was a sow coming up the ridge toward me. It looked toward me then headed up the hill toward my Jeep. I decided to follow her as far as possible knowing that every step closer to the Jeep is always a good thing. After a couple minutes I believe she caught my scent and bolted. I lower my Browning 270 A-bolt and dropped her before heading into the thick stuff. I dragged her the rest of the way up and had her loaded on the rack by 6:00. As I sat at the top of this ridge, I counted my blessings as I looked at the incoming storm clouds to the West. I knew that it would get sloppy the next day as you will surely read in other posts. Go to the link below to view some pictures.

I just ventured outside for the first time today and I've got to say I'm glad Jesse and I got off that mountain when we did. There's snow on Tejon all the way down to the desert floor. I don't think he had enough Gentleman Jack left to keep us both warm if we'd got stuck up there.

Well I had a great time seeing some old friends and meeting some new ones.
I got my first hog and got to brake in my new Ruger #1 in 300 win mag.
I shot the sow at about 700 yards I held up about 11 feet and about 4 feet for cross wind.
Just kidding I got it at 189 yards down in a flat spot under a power line tower on power line road.
Me and my Dad (Bishop) spent most of the evening hunting power line road. We first saw about 15 hogs coming up a short road from a power line tower and spent some time try to find them with no luck. Then we saw at least 5 or 6
hogs coming up on to a flat area under another set of power line towers about 1/2 mile south of us so we made tracks for the jeep to see if we could get to them before it got dark.Well we got a little bit ahead of them a walked down a small hill towards them they were still in the flat spot under the tower I got a perfect cross canyon shot and droped it in it's tracts. I got lucky and was able to drive a road down to the tower and only had to drag the hog about 10 feet and I used the jeep to do that.
Well I had a great time bad weather and all.

Hey guys,
Thanks for posting your stories for us to enjoy, It sounds like everyone had a great time. Regardless if you got a pig or not, I think I can say for us all, we just like to hear about your time in the great outdoors.
Just wanted to say we appreciate the effort.

One Track, passing on little ones... good for you, it will pay off BIG in the future. What did you take for a weapon?

Floatuber, nice hog, looks like a butterball, I can only amagine how good it will taste. Not to mention it was actually running towards your truck? How good can it get!

Speck, personal best, way to go. I hope we get a photo or two.
