Speck how to did your truck end up like that? Mud make you slide. I now it tends to make the rear end of a truck slide because there is no weight in the back. Were you traveling in 4-wheel drive?

It was a great weekend, could have been better had I shot a pig, but hey that's hunting. Weather made it hard to get into a few spots where the pigs were. Like Yotegetter said we busted a fat sow with piglets, so I guess we gave her a free pass.

Scott, I'm glad to hear you got off the hill, it got real nasty up there and it did it fast. Myself a yotegetter passed your truck on the way down, and I was wondering if you made it down alright. We woud've waited, but your truck was better equiped for that stuff then we were, and we wanted to get down in a hurry.

Speck, that picture dosen't do your being stuck justice, glad everything worked out alright.

It was great seeing everyone again, and for those of you I met for the first time, It was nice meeting you, and I hope to see ya'll again. Anyone know if the June POR is sold out????

Awesome Hunt, and spectacular place. I had a blast!

Judging by the posts, it sounds like the South Side got a lot more rain than the North. There was a band of the storm that hit Saturday afternoon, and it dumped rain on the "Haul Road" but the worst part seemed to miss the camping area. Coming down that Haul Road was a nightmare, though! It was slick as heck, you couldn't steer your truck, you were just going down the gullies in the road! After the rain hit, there was a caravan of trucks slipping and sliding down the hill. It was a thing of beauty to watch!

I got a boar on the North Side on Sunday about 0830 AM. Needed some help from Ron Gayer to get him out. We were dragging him out with a P/U, and he rolled down a 50' hill and wedged himself under a giant rock overhang. He should be nicely tenderized after that!

He weighed in (field dressed) at 178lb. These pigs are "self sealing". There was no external wound, so looking him over, I wasn't sure where I had hit him, but when I was skinning him, the whole cape and head fell off because his neck was missing.

Will have some photos and more detail on my own web site (with a link).

Rocky

Met Hronk (+1) on the North Side Sunday Morning. Shot my pig right up that canyon to the east of where we were talking.

Does Tejon publish any "official" results? Weight, Names, winners, etc?

Well I got my pig in about 10 minutes! Yah... that's the ticket. What an easy hunt! Of course I had to help everyone else learn how to hunt, but that's part of being THE GREATEST HUNTER IN THE WORLD!!... ya... and the pig I killed was 700lbs, ..YA, and I killed it with an "Old Timer" pocket knife...ya, that’s the ticket... and if you don't believe me here's a pic:

It was a blast hunting with the JHP gang. Next time I will leave the Harp home.

Wow! With all these great reports, I really wish I could go to one of these PORs with all of you guys. Darn college is taking up all my time, oh well, next year after I graduate, I'll have to reward myself by going to the Tejon Ranch and hunt for the hogs. Great stories, keep them coming...and photos, gotta have photos.

Boy does a hot shower and warm sheets feel good.

I got on the Tejon late Friday about 3 PM. Glassed and drove around but didn't see any hogs. I did see a bunch of deer and 4 elk on top of Ghegus Ridge, 3 of them still had antlers which I found odd for the middle of March. It was too late in the day for my camera to take any pics of them in the low light. I really wanted to pop a pig Friday like Floattuber did knowing the rain was coming.

muley-does-bedded-por-3-2003.jpg

After a rousing late night around the campfire I had a Twilight Zone type dream of houses burning with harmonica theme music playing in the background. Turns out Pitdog had gotten into the whiskey a bit and he stayed up playing his harp to greet the sunrise. That explained the harp music in my dream but I still haven't figured out what the burning houses means.

I woke up about 6am Saturday and it was raining cats and dogs so I crawled back into the fart sack. Woke up again at 8am and it was still pouring. Finally got up and headed out in the rain. Didn't see any hogs and when we heard Speckmisser was playing Mario Andretti on one of the hairier roads we decided to go offer moral support and maybe some chains or tow straps. We ended up seeing the save of his truck thanks to those up on the ridge helping out.

While we were waiting to see Speck pulled out Chris, (DILPRXO) popped this boar above us. I felt bad that we left not knowing he was dragging the hog down to the road we were on. Sorry Chris.

Here is the 7mm 140 grain Nosler Partition bullet we pulled out of Chris' hog later.

bullet-hog-7mm-140grain-nosler-partition-dilproxo-por.jpg

I then went down and hiked up another canyon only to find it loaded with some other hunters who started banging away at pigs right before dark. Later I heard the guy was on a hog lease there and had whacked a huge sow over 350 lbs and another pig in that canyon.

Finally the rain stopped and we could cook a decent supper that night. We all worried about Speck and Scott since they didn't get back til lafter 1AM. We didn't think they would get stuck AGAIN!!! Saturday morning a big wind had blown over many of the tents and the Bishop's Easy Up so the camp was a huge mess. Some of the sissy lalas went into town and got rooms at the motel in Lebec. Just for the record, the manly ones who stayed and improvised were the Bishops, Speckmisser, grtwhitehunter, Paul C and myself. Who needs a mint on their pillow anyways.

Sunday morning with no rain I headed out early and tried to go up on the main road but fog had socked in the high areas which left cruising Bear Trap canyon as the only choice. Finally, the fog lifted and I headed up to near the aqueduct to glass some. Evan and Yotegetter busted out a sow but it was a long shot for me and when they hollered she had piglets I pulled up.

That afternoon Scott led me up to where him and Speck had been seeing a lot of pigs. After a short hike in I glassed up some hogs on a finger ridge about 4:15pm. I figured I had about a 45 minute stalk for a decent shot but the dark clouds rolling in had me debating on what to do. I had food and enough cigars to stay the night but I'm sure Barbara and Don would have been upset to not have us check out. I left Scott a note since he didn't have a radio I was bailing off the ridge before the storm hit and hit the trail. I left about 15 minutes too late and the clouds and pouring rain hit me on the last little peak I had to go around.

The fog and clouds were so thick I drove off onto a ridge road in the wrong direction. I was puckering pretty bad.
<
One minute my GPS track said I was going the right way down and then next time I looked at the GPS track I saw this little line heading off into nowhere land. I stopped on this steep narrow ridge road where I couldn't see 10 feet. I needed to turn around but I first wanted to make sure I didn't go tumbling down the mountain to do so. I got finally turned around in the pea soup and headed back to where my GPS said I missed the turn to go down. I decided to wait up there and listen to the weather forecast on the scanner to see if the storm would lift at all that night. I wasn't sure if Scott had already gone by so I pulled out the latest issue of "Hog Hunter Girl" and got comfy with a cigar. The articles are sure good in that mag.
<

About 45 minutes later I saw lights creeping down the two track and figured it had to be the only other nut on the mountain in a full bore spring storm chasing pigs. We both agreed we needed to chain up to atttempt the slide down the remaining steep switchbacks. My GPS showed about a mile left of white knuckle driving down the slope. Being the bravest I let Scott go first.
<

The fog had lifted a bit where you could see about 50 feet which was all we needed. Scott slid around the first switchback that was thankfully off camber into the bank and not over the edge. He then got out to check the next swtichback and I thought "Here we go, we're sleeping here tonight like a billy goat hanging off the side off a mountain". Scott jumps back in his truck and jams it in gear and takes off down the hill. I ease down behind him to only see the darn pavement right in front of us. For some reason my GPS made it look like the hard stuff was further down the hill then it was. I know we were both relieved to be off that nasty mountain road.

I had a ball as usual even in the rain. It was a pleasure to meet some new folks and see the other familiar faces as well.

20/20 hindsight. Don't go on the ridges if it's raining without a sleeping bag and food in case you need to spend the night. Go with another vehicle in case you get stuck. Have chains and tug em straps. A radio also helps to contact others looking for you or your buddy. A GPS is a must, it saved me from heading off lost on that ridge when I couldn't see. We had several groups that ended up in the north end in good clear weather and had to spend several hours backtracking to the south gate on I-5 to get back in late at night. If you're on the high ridges and see a storm coming get off as fast as possible. My hesitation of 15 minutes cost me.

"Biggest Idiot of The Weekend" award goes to the clowns in the motorhome who drove the Suzuki SUV with the funky raised up lights on the roof who were spotlighting after dark and pointed a rifle barrel at some movement in the dark. That movement was EvanIII and Yotegetter walking out. The bozos had a vehicle trailer with the number 75 on it so they appeared to be racers of some sort. Hopefully they will pull that stunt with the wrong people next time and they will get that barrel used as a popsicle stick on their backside.

I didn't get many pics because of all the wet weather. Looking forward to the next hog whacking expedition. Congrats to all who got their pigs and thanks to all for a safe hunt that ended with everyone making it home.

Congrats to everyone on having a good time. Getting pigs was the frosting on the cake for some of you.

Sorry I didn't make it out there for this one. But, I can tell you from pass experience that Roadmisser, I mean Speckmisser is very good at slipping and sliding. He seems to have this deep desire for sliding sideways across roads of mud.....lol

Man tell me! Last time I was in the truck with him on some back roads I was clenching my teeth so hard I actually cracked a tooth!

Spec hasn't stopped teasing me about being a scardy kat. But now you fellas can see why I get nervous with him driving in the mud.

Hey, too bad we didn't get some pictures in the Cargill salt march that time he got stuck out there. Just a picture of all the mud on him and his daughter would have told the whole story.

You had to go there, didn't ya?

Good thing Dilxpro didn't know about that little adventure, he'd have never agreed to ride with me on Saturday morning.

As it is, I may never get anyone to ride with me again. First Rusman rides with me, and ends up dragging not one but three pigs... and none of them were his. Then Dilxpro rides with me, and I nearly take both of us over the side of the mountain. At least he got a pig out of the deal.

LOL! No wonder you were so quick to offer to take me under your wing! You just wanted somebody to help push! That is OK, though. With a build like mine, ballast is one of my better skills.

Yeah Pitdog. Got mine 5 minutes after you got yours.

Had a great time, and meeting all the JHP guys was a pleasure. What a great group of hunters. Even got serenaded to sleep Friday night.

When I'm 80 I'll still remember the toboggan run in the Jimmy. Had a nightmare about it last night.

First time in my 44 years I ever had a DRIVER yell at me with a look like a Bigeye Tuna "GET OUT, GET OUT!!!" and then try and step out of the truck.

Great place, saw the biggest hog butt walking into the brush I've seen in all my hunting life.

I'm in for the April or June POR.

Congrats to all those who scored!

Tejon is a great piece of property. saw over 100 deer, 2 elk, 1 yote, 30+ pigs, 1 badger, 20+ turkeys, and a young sow with 5 new babies. this with the rain and fog.
friday, had best oppurtunity, waited for a better shot on 2 bedded hogs and it didnt work out.
sat, saw pigs all out of reasonable stalking or dragging distance. went down a road that knew could not go up so drove 25 miles out of the way to get back to camp

sunday, made poor decision to wait for fog to clear on top of ridge and missed out on prime time .

met some good folks for the first time, and got a chance to see some that i had met before.

Ok, Not that the bonehead in the suzuki is ccompletely forgivin for almost shotting me and yotegetter, but sunday night up on that ridge I was really greatfull to see that little suzuki again. We couldn't see 5 feet in front of us since we were inside a black storm cloud, the roads were getting really nasty, and we were going to follow pitdog down since he knew another way down the hill that was a little better then the way we went up. somehow we lot him in the fog and we weren't sure which way he went. Myself and Jesse (yotegetter) were sitting there trying to figure how to get down the hill since we both had never been up on this ridge before and had no clue which way to go. It didn't help any that we couldn't even see. When of course that damn little suzuki pulled up next to us. I figured great, it had to be the guys who almost shot us, their probly gonna leave us behind and leave us to spend the night on that ridge. Well they actully stopped, they offered to show us the way down the hill. We started out down the hill, with the suzuki behind us, and they followed us all the way down the hill. I will say that it is nice to have another vehicle with you when it starts to get nasty, and it was even nicer when I saw that he had a winch on the front of the suzuki. It wasn't to bad, we did get to slipping and slideing, but we made it down. I almost thought we were going to be up on that ridge for awhile or maybe a day or two.

Ahh, yes, it is coming back to me now... I was referring to the multiple tow truck incedent. Did I ever tell you about the time up on top of some old mine road..... You know, Jesse may need to make a new forum... Specmisser's stuck truck forum.

Hey now! We didn't get stuck at New Idria Mine.

I turned us around and went back the way we came because you were about to drive your fingers clean through my dashboard!
