Our group of three bagged only one pig. It was a black and white boar dressed out at 237 lbs (Barbara weighed it) with the girth measured around the chest behind the forward legs at 49 inches. It had 2.5 inch matching bottom tusks and upper tusks that went down and curled back up. We hunted, drove, and walked our asses off looking for pigs. We even crawled through numerous stands of brush through typical bedding areas after a long hike to get to it, me with just my 357 mag. A rifle wouldn't have fit. We got all the pigs that were within shooting distance. That was just the one pig. What it got down to at Tejon was being in the right place at the right time plus pure luck. There were lots of hunters. Lots of mud, slick mud roads even with 4X4, and nasty fog. The slick roads and thick fog limited hunting opportinities to just a small area on Saturday evening and Sunday to about mid-day. Our stands on Bear Trap Road Sunday evening out in the rain were foiled by two hunters in a white Toyota P/U. We had a boar coming in that we had spotted in the A.M. and set up for him in the evening. The truck, which looked at each hunter as they passed him, stopped or slowed at one of the hunters' stands just as the boar was coming in. I'm sure the people in the Toyota truck were totally unaware of the boar's proximity. Well the boar took off and no shot was afforded the patient stand hunter sitting in the rain. Hunter etiquette, if hunters are in a stand, don't linger around ie. the stand hunters are under trees, camoed, and no vehicle in sight. Show a little respect.

I got this info from Barbara on the phone (hope I wrote it down correctly):

North Side Results:

Bigest Pig: 242 lb.
2nd: 210 lb.
3rd: 178 lb. (2 people tied)

I didn't get the South Side info.

She also said:

North and South areas were running "neck and neck" all weekend, but the South finally pulled ahead at the end. Final Totals:

North Area: 26 pigs
South Area: 28 pigs

Well, finally managed to get my full write-up onto my website. It may be a bit windy, but it still doesn't cover half of the trip.

One thing I wish that I'd been able to include was how cool it was to finally hang out with so many of the JHPers in person. Unfortunately, the best chance for that was Saturday night, and by the time I got back to camp ya'll had all crashed. I guess that just means I'll have to meet up with all of you again sometime soon.

Hogskin, where can I get some tracks like that for my Dodge?

Docapi-

The POR's are limited to 50 hunters per region. The South sold out, and I'm pretty sure the North did too.

Not sure about the desert side.

If I remember right Barbara said they combined the desert side into the south side adding more hunters and land. 70 hunters on the south side she said for this past POR.

One more note on if it rains at the Tejon. Even in bad weather you can cruise Bear Trap Canyon in a 2 wheel drive vehicle and you can hike up either side to chase hogs. To the north of Bear Trap Canyon is Ghegus ridge where many hogs are shot. If you shoot a hog on Ghegus it would be a moderate drag down to Bear Trap canyon to get it out.

There is also the main paved road that heads north out of the campground in Bear Trap Canyon up past the aqueduct that has many canyons heading east where hogs were seen or taken. The only problem can be fog or low clouds limiting visibilty. I had to wait one morning for about an hour for the low clouds to lift.

Wow! That is better than a 50% success rate! Not bad considering the weather/roads problems and only a 2 1/2 day hunt.

That settles it! I will definitely be there for the JHP hunt next year. Don't know how I am gonna pull it off yet, but I will figure out a way.

I had an interesting e-mail tonight from another hunter that was at the POR. It seems that this person, who would like to be anonymous, saw the “Wind” blow my tent down which entailed dragging a 100lb ice chest 12ft (which was inside) and bent two heavy gage steel poles in half and ripped a 2ft hole in the back of the tent (other side of where the wind was blowing)... Interestng
<
one of the inner steak loops on the back of the tent was ripped out along with the cloth, but the floor of the tent remained flush with the ground???? Perhaps the grount shifted and the wind was never a factor???

All I have to say is WOW!!! That wind is clever!!! I mean imagine such a force that could move a tent that 2 men couldn’t budge and not touch the other tents. Whew!!!
Lucky for Mr. Wind I didn’t see him commit this cowardly act or it WOULD have become real nasty!

See ya again Mr. Wind

Dang, Pitdog.

That wind sounds like a strong, tough hombre. Maybe it's a good thing you didn't see him blowing through camp!

0 for 2. We didn't see anything on Friday. Probably walked way more than we needed to as most were taken in close proximity to vehicles. Saturday morning after the 1st 30 min. of light and heavy gunfire, we saw a total of about 30 pigs in small family groups Hi-tailing it to the heavy cover. we spent most of the day working the canyons. My partner missed a lone Boar at about 40yds running thru the brush. At about 4pm with some super heavy rain coming down, I spotted a group of 12 at about 300yds just loafing along. I snuck within about 70yds when a group showed up where I 1st saw the pigs and started blazing away. End of sneak. I did get a running 20yd shot that I shouldn't of chanced right before dark.. Saw nothing on Sunday. I did see over 100 Elk 2-300 Deer a Bobcat and believe it or not...... A Buck Antelope 7 miles south of Mohave where the Freeway starts. Has anyone ever seen an Antelope in Antelope Valley....Seriously!!. Anyway. I had a great time and will definitly go next year.....hronk

Yep Hronk, we've got a few. They all "belong" to Tejon Ranch though. I've never seen one as far east as Mojave. I see quite a few off 138 out closer to the I5.

Glad you had a good time.

Hey Rocky, I was up in the North side also. Your persistence paid off. I was quite frustrated most of the time. (mostly because of inexperience). The story on your link was great. It gives me more incentive. By the way, where is Hawg Canyon, and what's up with the poison ivy?

Rocky,

Great write-up! Persistence always pays. Some people call it stubborn... when they're talking about me, it's called mule-headed... but the bottom line is, if you give up you'll NEVER get your pig. So never give up.

By the way, you wanna sell that Land Cruiser?
