Sorry I've never been former fence hunt operator(not even sure what that means). I am actually for high fence deals and I've hunted them before and like them. Just don't try to show it off as a tough hunt, call it like it is, a kill.

yes you are right my family own and operates a 6,000 acre cattle ranch in central california. back in the hayday we use to sell alot of pig hunts for $495 to $795. now we don't mess with the hunting because of the recession. its not worth the time or effort taking people out for a few hundrd bucks which is what everyone wants to pay now adays. people just need to realize that hunting ain't cheap anymore and paying to go on a private property to hunt doesn't go just go in the ranchers pocket as pure profit.
Perhaps your family's cattle ranch was unfenced. I just assumed all modern cattle ranches were fenced. I apologize if I misrepresented your family's former hunting business. As for your opinion that my hunt wasn't a hunt but a kill...you weren't there, you haven't seen the place or hiked it with a bow. Maybe you're a Psychic Friend?

Yes...you are guessin' and you are dead wrong. It is a string barb fence (about 4') w/ one electric wire at ankle height.

One thing an African PH told me once was in a charge don't stand and shoot, it increases your chance to miss over the back of the critter. He said to drop to one knee which puts your rifle on the same plane as the charging animal. You don't need any lead in other words. I've never had a chance to put the advise to use but I have seen a couple videos where the PH dropped to a knee when the client screwed up on a charging animal. Of course the drawback is since your squatted down you're not as mobile if you miss and have to react quickly to dodge the pizzed off animal. Don't miss I guess is the best advise.

As for dropping to one knee with a bow, that might be a harder shot than with a rifle plus I don't straighten up as fast as I used to Jesse...and I often make a strange sound now whenever I get up. Never used to do that. Aging ain't for p*ssies.
High fence? Pfft who cares? I've been to some in NM and TX. The high fence surrounds tens of thousands of acres. You could not hike across, I've tried. One place was 160000 acres. I don't give a crap how high the fence is. The hunting is hard.

It's on my bucket list however, none of the guided hunts are conducted in summer...they prefer to do it in the cold weather months...especially when there's snow on the ground. That said, it is possible (however slim) I might get a shot at one on this ranch or one of the nearby properties. I will be visiting the neighbors to broaden my access in this area and hope to get lucky and call one in or locate a fresh kill and camp out on it. There are big cats there but relatively few and they are used to getting shot at. I kinda like this pose for a mount (stored outta state of course):

Using a call would be the best beat and a lot of time to do it.
The pic of the mount creeped me out it reminds me of my x wife my first reaction was to check my wallet for my cash.

If I do get one I think I will file suit against the DFG and challenge the law in Federal court for restraint of interstate trade. Federal trade laws trump state law. The state will have to justify (for the 1st time) the restriction and deal with the feds.

That's not crap...I agree 100% with you dog. My shock & awe regarding some of the pricey guide fees being charged for hog hunting was misplaced and I never should have posted them and for that error in judgment I sincerely apologize to all JHOers. Sometimes I'm an azz-O! It was not my intent to criticize or condemn hunters who pay these fees, I was just expressing my sticker shock. I won't make that mistake again. I support anyone hunting in any fashion that is legal.
Well thank you Bruce. Every hunter has the right to hunt the way they want as long as it's lagal.
I did enjoy your story. And have to wounder how the ranch owner is going to keep his critters in with that setup . I see critters go over And through fences like that all the time here in farmland ohio.

I'm sure eventually he'll upgrade the fence but the area has few water sources so the animals that do make it out will likely return outta thirst. Plus there's the whole predator issue...they are pressured for sure. The electric wire seems to be fairly effective.
