Just to add a note..... I've had to pay for a few hunts....some canned hunts and some I worked my arse off. I was blessed enough to have a man take me under his wing and share his lease with me. I've seen most situations and feel blessed for each one...because I learned something each time. Most of all I have a story with each hunt, an outdoor adventure that taught me the importance of being a man and to appreciate each hunt....tagged out or not. High fence, low fence, canned hunt or canyon walls with no water.... I'm grateful for each one! Just my thoughts.

As a newbie to the sport, I have learned from each and every outing including the canned and guided hunts. Whether or not I learned enough is another question that will likely be answered later this fall on my archery elk backpack hunt in NW OR. It'll be my best test thus far. Not worried as much about the rack size (I'd settle for a 300-400). LOL

300 - 400 that should be cake . I bet your back to the camp in a half day . As we said earlier every person has the right to hunt the way they want as long as it's legal. But I agree that the price some people are paying in CA is quiet shocking. I know there are deals in Texas that $550 gets you two days hunting , bunk house or lodge rooms , food and guide. You can shoot three pigs and no extra charge for the guide to clean your hogs. However most of the hunting is over feeders and guides just drop you off then pick you up latter. Where in Ca most the hunts I read about are spot and stalk type hunts and the guides are with you all day or atleast tell you make a kill. But they only feed you lunch and don't give you a place to sleep. I read one that was $575 per pig and I think that is quiet high. But if they are happy with it , then thats great for them.
I took my wife on a small area ( couple hundred acres ) canned hunt for her first pig hunt. And what I learned is I don't want anything to do with it again. And hogs get pissed off if you don't put a good shot on them. And when they are pissed off they still don't want to die when you put two good shoots on them. In my opinion there is a huge differance between a 200 acre canned hunt and a canned hunt with thousands of acres.

We agree then. The idea of paying $1150. to a guide to shoot 2 pigs you first purchased tags for is just incredible to me. Add tags and tip and you you're pushing $1300.00 which is a lot of store bought bacon. And the small canned hunts really are nothing like the big fence properties...apples and oranges comparision IMO. While I'm in AZ this week I am going to visit all the surrounding ranches and pass out cards in hopes of gaining trespass permission form signatures. Lots of yotes out there! Hope to be posting photos of dead doggies next week.

Yes we do agree. However I can see why a guide will charge more when he may have to do alot more work in the field than the guide that just dropes yo off and picks you up. I also have had a guide stick with me and do a spot and stalk hunt in Tx . Also some hunters don't want anything but spot and stalk hunting. They don't like the idea of hunting over a feeder or stand hunting of any kind. So they will pay more for the spot and stalk hunts. That's why I say it's your hunt and your money hunt the way you want and have fun. Good luck with your hunting. I think I will hunt hogs in Tx again this year.

One other small point . Very few hunters in the lower 48 are hunting just to put food on the table, they hunt for sport. If you figure the price of guns, ammo, bows, arrowes, broadheads, tags, gas and all the other stuff we pay for to hunt. Most all of us pay a heavy price per pound for our meat. Heck I have hunted south africa and you can't bring home any meat. It was a heavy price for heads on the wall, but the hunting was great. Everything in south africa is high fence even Kruger national forest. It may be 200,000 acres or more but its still high fenced. Thats alot of walking and driving around in a truck.

Ya know...you make an inarguable point I hadn't actually considered. I guess hunting is a poor choice to select for a cost-benefit analysis. Here's the ram (rambouillet) I shot.

I got two this week but they are not coming to the call. They appear to be in full nocturnal mode now and I shot one that happened to walk out into the open downwind of me as i was parking the truck and a second one that came to a watering hole i was still hunting. Twice I had elk walk right out in front of me (24-50 yards...all bulls with one 10 pointer in velvet and massive) and one smaller elk actually blocked my shot at the yote for a few moments before I could squeeze off a shot. Then the bull took off while the dog did donuts. I tried to film that with my Epic Cam but the image was grainy and poor due to the low light conditions at dusk. I labeled that spot ELK HOLE!

Way go bruce . Deer bow season starts Sep 29th for us. I can't wait to get out and try to stick one. I have just been fishing with the grandkids for outdoor fun . I have caught a few bass but mostly just bait hooks and help the kids. My 6 year old grandson caught his first crappie on a spinner. He really liked fishing like his granddad, not with worms. Happy hunting. I hope I can post up a good buck later this year. And need to restock the freezer.
