Good Work Man! That's really cool to see all those big sheds. Seems like you are finding most of them in the grassy areas and by feilds. Do you find many deep into the woods??

Today was my last day off work to shed hunt. I didn't do as good as the last couple days, numbers wise, but man did I find a nice set!

They were lying about 5 yards from eachother and it wasn't until I was taking a picture of the first one, that I saw the match lying under some deadfall. These are propably 4-5 years old (lying there for 4 or 5 years).

I found 1 small 4 point at the start of the day, so I ended up with 3. Grand total of 61!

Things will start to slow down for me now due to work, which always seems to get in the way.

Enjoy

4 to 5 years old! In the Midwest everyone keeps telling me that I need to get out before the rodents get to them or the yotes. Do you have that problem up there?

We really don't have rodent problems all that much in central and southern SK. The odd one gets chewed by porcupines. I think squirrels are the worst for antler chewing and there arent too many until you get in the northern forest areas.

Update....

I found 2 old 4 point antlers on saturday morning. I didn't bother taking pics because they weren't in that great of shape. Saturday afternoon I drove up to visit my fiance who is running a DU field site for the summer a few hours north of Saskatoon. There's lots of deer up there and I hoped we could go out for a shed hunt or 2.

She already had a coupke spots picked out, but I had to give her a hand moving into her new field house (Old farm house) first. As luck would have it the landlords of the field house said that they had deer moving through this yard all winter. We got a few things moved in and went for a quick walk around the yard. Within 10 minutes I found a real big 4 point that was about 2-3 years old. Nicole(Birdbrianer) found a nice fresh 4 point a while later!

On the drive to the field house I noticed a grain field across the road that had heavy, and I mean heavy deer trails going to it from all directions. We woke up this morning, and did some more house related activities, and in the afternoon we went over to the nieghbours (who own the grain field), to introduce ourselvs and ask to shed hunt.

Apparently there was a large pile of grain out in the field all winter and the deer hit it hard. The guy and his wife were super nice and let us go out and look. The landowner said that it was a wierd year for sheds. He said most of the bucks still had antlers even in the first week of April and that last year he picked up over 60 sheds in that one field, and only 1 this year so far but that he hadn't been out there much. I though that was wierd too but we went out anyway.

I found a nice fresh 4 point along a slough edge, and a matched set (4 point) lying side by side (almost touching) out in the stubble. Not too bad for only an hour of looking. We had to get back and get Nicole settled into the house.

I have a feeling she's gonna pick up a pile of sheds this year doing field work...I'm just a bit jealous!

I'm up to 67 now and had a great weekend in some new territory!

Oh yeah, as went to take pics of my first shed I found up there I realized I had forgotten to put my memory card back in the cam after the last time I downloaded, so no pics this time.

I just got back from a trip to the arctic doing some field work. Not much for for whitetails around the Arctic Ocean, but I did manage to find one fresh caribou shed.

That puts me at 68 sheds for the year. Not as good numbers wise this year for me, but I definitly found better qaulity sheds than last year and found some new territory!

Looks like you had some bad luck this year getting out and then the snow storm before your arrival to the Arctic.Congrats on the caribou shed!!It looked like a pretty good antler.Do you usually find more fresh caribou sheds then old ones?
I can't say your quality of sheds was any better this year then other years, your sheds have always been impressive.

I've been very fortunate and gratefull for my last 3 shed seasons. Since moving to Saskatchewan 3 years ago, they have been my three best shed years of my life.

Year 1 (2004) in SK ws by far my best. I found 105 during the shed season, and probably about 25 more throughout the summer and fall. That year I found quite a few real big fresh antlers.

last year (2005) was just as good for numbers, but I didn't find the big fresh ones like I did the year before.

This year, 2006, I found less antlers, and lots of them were big (although not huge like the ones in 2004) way better year for big sheds than 2005.

I already can't wait to see what 2007 will bring!

Congrats to all those that burnt some boots, popped some blisters and enjoyed another great shed season outdoors!

Take care!

Hey Pred, It's amazing you are able to find the number of sheds you do with Gary Donald and Bentley Cobin prowling around there.
