PUBLIC ALERTED TO G&F HABITAT AREA CLOSURES
WGFD, Contact: Jeff Obrecht
11/29/02
CHEYENNE -- Big game seasons are nearly over and many Wyoming Game and Fish Department habitat areas that provide big game winter range will be closed.
According to G&F Habitat Supervisor Gary Butler, seasonal closures minimize stress-causing disturbance to wintering deer, elk and other wildlife. The closures also reduce the human and recreational impacts to the forage, which supports wintering wildlife.
This era of high elk populations and long seasons has 12 of the 26 major habitat areas in elk hunt areas whose seasons extend beyond the habitat area closure. “Elk hunters can use the habitat areas during the elk season after the habitat closure date,” Butler says. “Special circumstances could arise, though, so elk hunters should check with the closest G&F regional office prior to hunting on a ‘closed’ habitat area.”
