Congrats that's a nice eating size hog.

Thank you! I've been scouting and hunting solo for years. It's finally paying off. I wish I had joined this forum a long time ago 😅

Nice work. It isn't easy. Now you have to tell us what rifle and caliber you used, the distance, what time of day you shot it at, your general strategy and how long before you saw him before you shot him. Sorry but it's the Successful Hunter Rules. It's in the book.

Fair enough... I used a Savage II 308 stainless steel 130 grain Barnes ttsx( phenomenal trajectory) . I actually have harvested my pigs at 1030 and 1pm contrary to popular belief that it's always a morning hunt. Funny story the pack scared me as I was taking a pee break. Alluded me completely. I circled a hill 2x looking for them. Gone, I assume they used a dry creek bed. But as I was heading out I noticed 2 pigs on a hill adjacent. They were about 250 yards away. We crawled into a good position and took it it was all about 2 min before the shot. It was 189 yard shot. The second pig I noticed crossing public lands road. Followed him for about 300 yards and cut him off on a slope. It was about 159 yards up a hill. The 308 seems to drop them on the spot . No tracking needed throughand through bullet, tor the larger hogs i carry a 168. But almsot seems like the 130 do fine . I've yet to harvest anything past 376. The buck on the pic has been my farthest shot. Also with the 130 went through the neck. I had another through as well on a buck.

That's the best hunting story I've heard all year!! I like that they were still around when it seemed they would have left. I like that you were seeing them in the day hours. I like that you strategically cut the last one off - THAT is hunting! I also like that you are shooting an authoritative .308 and shutting them down. Of course all pig hunters know that shot placement is a big factor there. So you are shooting straight and spot on. I would probably have instinctively gone for the larger 168 grain in your shoes but you just proved it wasn't necessary. And yes animals can show up when answering nature's call...maybe I'll write a story here about what showed up when I was a kid hunting with my dad but too young to carry a gun and my dad handed me his Savage Model 99 while he answered nature's call many years ago. Thank you for sharing those great details about your fantastic hunting adventure with your fellow hunters. Great job!

Do tell. I love me a good hunt story !
Thanks for joining the thread . 😁

I agree, any time beforehand I would have also used the 168.

These rifles are underrated .
I supposed it helped that I did some marksmanship training . I would dare take long shots when I started. I zeroed for 200 and kept it under 250. Now I feel okay shooting out to 400 with a degree of comfort and lethality. Those savage rifles are underrated I say.

Congrats that's a nice eating size hog.

These are definitely delicious. I steamed the meat for 5 hrs and then add a green sauce on it before serving. It's delicious. They aren't too old/big , rough on the meat.
I believe the female definitely tastes better, but then again they were on slightly different diets.
