Great group of guys and what an awesome time we had this weekend! As one of the "new guys", and never having hunted Tejon before, I really didn't know what to expect. What I got was exactally what I had hoped for and more.
I kinda teamed up with Dave (Q2), or maybe he took me under his wing, I don't know for sure. Anyway, he is a great guy, excellent hunter, and knows the ranch, so we started hitting some of his favorite spots. Friday evening we spot three pigs but were unable to put the sneak on them and get a shot. Exciting but not gonna happen. When we got back to the cabin, Mark (YORT40's bro) had one in the bag. Sweet! After a great dinner from Ron and Darrell and a few drinks later, we hit the sack.
Next morning I'ts up at 3:15 to do battle. Dave and I get to our spot at perfect light, we make a plan and head out. Nothing. Our morning hunt was a bust so we head back to the cabin for lunch and some much needed rest. Man you can get tired as it's kinda steep in some spots. At this point I'm thinking maybe I have some kind of stink on me or something.
The evening hunt we got on pigs. Yes! I get the honors (thanks Dave) so the stalk begins. I could see three of them in the creek looking for food, so I sneak to about 25 yards and see that it's a wet sow and two piglets. Dang. As she moves down the creek and I follow looking for more pigs, I get busted by a young boar. Double dang. I shoot for 30 yards and see my arrow go low and slightly to the right. The pig takes off without a squeal and I could not see the hit. After tracking blood for more than a half mile we lost all sign. Triple dang. I was sick.
When we got to the cabin Ron, Kurt, Corey, and Troy drove in with Kurt's pig. I could barely recognize Kurt as his smile was so big. Congratulations buddy, it was an honor to hunt with you. Good job.
Great group of guys. Great hunt. Thanks Dave for putting it all together and allowing me to be part of it too. Ernie
Ernie, Glad to see ya made it home safe. It was a pleasure meeting ya and getting to drag pork up the hill side by side.My 5 hour drive across the desert had my eyes rolling back in the sockets, but I made it.
Great stories guys! Since Johnny is not an internet guy, I'll tell a quick version of his deal yesterday morning. Ernie, Troy, Johnny, Corey and myself took off on a little late morning push across a hillside. We had spread out about 100 yds. between each of us and started across the face of the hill. About 30 minutes into it I hear Johnny below me trying to get my attention. He was waving for me to come down to him. I get down and he told me the deal. He had hit a pig but knew that he had hit it bad and the pig was holed up just over the rise. About then the pig stepped out from behind some brush and Johnny took another shot and again, hit him bad. We had about 100 yds. before the pig got to a spot where the hillside just dropped off into an abyss so we spread out a bit to try to just get this pig dead. I had veered over far left to get in front of him and he stepped out at 40 yds. where I double lunged him. He flopped over and started rolling downhill and finally got stopped by small scrub oak.......right before rolling off the edge of the earth. We looked at each other with some relief. The pig wiggled a little bit and started going end over end off the edge. We lost sight of him and after about 15 seconds heard a big loud crash. It was him smashing into a big fallen oak tree down in the hole. We make our way down to him and get to work. Troy, Ernie, Corey and Ron made their way down to us and we all took turns pulling this guy up the hill with our ski ropes. In all of this action Johnnys buddy (me
) forgot to take any pics of him and his pig. What a dummy.
Earlier in the morning all of us went up to a great glassing spot to look around. Corey spotted a nice boar across the canyon feeding down towards the bottom and yelled for me to go get em, so I was off. He had bedded down under a buckeye tree and I had a pretty good idea where he was but you know how it is, looking at it from the other side of the canyon is a bit different than when you get there. I worked my way up to the spot I wanted to get to and man, all those buckeye trees look the same when you're standing there! It felt like I was close, but I wasnt sure. I thought I needed to get about 15 yds. higher when from 1000 yds. across the canyon I hear one of the guys yell "HE"S RIGHT NEXT TO YOU". When I finished cracking up I started moving left a couple slow steps and the pig exploded out of the brush. Pretty funny stuff.
Looks like some nice hams for the freezer! Congrats to everyone! Just gets me even more pumped for my hunt this weekend at RNJ. I'm with shot on the fact now I really won't be able to sleep the next four days.
Hey guys! Great stories, congrats on the great lookin pigs! Love to see a good bow kill. Also love reading First Time Hunter's accounts.... takes me back...
