A pilot program at Quarry Lakes, where anglers exchange their lead used as fishing weights for non-toxic metals such as steel, has collected and recycled more than 1,000 pounds of fishing lead after 10 years. That’s a lot of lead, often just a few split shot at a time. The program is the first of its kind on the West Coast. It has received great support from anglers because they are not forced to give up lead they have bought for weights, but are provided a free exchange by the East Bay Regional Park District and Alameda County Water Department, which runs the program.
