My buddy and I plan on a Elk hunt next year in Oregon. Between the two of us our points should average 7 or 8 points. We are nonresident hunters for Oregon. I am just looking for advise on possible units that might be good starting points. We are looking from central Oregon down south towards Calif. East to west is wide open for us. Anyone have any suggestions with a good combination of public land access and somewhat decent success. Thanks for any help you might have.

I hunted out of Sumpter and Granite a few years ago. Lots of elk and a fair amount of mule deer.

I don't think you need points except mostly for controlled hunts. I don't know much about the lower half of the state, most of the focus tend to concentrate on the Northeast units. They have lots of data on the Oregon Fish and Game website though- unit map, harvest stats for archery, rifle by unit, etc. Good stuff to help narrow the field.

I guess I should have been a little more specific. We do plan on doing a controlled hunt. I have been looking at the ODFW website but was just hoping I might get some insight through the website as well. Thanks.
