Cousin came down for the weekend and I told him I would take him pig hunting first thing Saturday morning before we went and grabbed the boat to go Sturgeon Fishing. Well we headed over to a WU ranch near Vacaville and pulled into the ranch at about 6am. At 6:20 we had the truck parked where we wanted and headed about 1/2 mile back into the canyon we wanted to be in. Found two great pig trails and did a little circle to get a better view of the North slope. We had been standing looking around for about 5 minutes when all of the sudden I caught a glimpse of a pig coming up the canyon. Told the cousin to grab the tree beside me and take him when he cleared the last tree branch. Pig cam right up the trail walking at a steady pace. Cousin took aim and down the pig went. After a 75 minute drag out we had the pig in the truck and were headed for the boat. Skinned the pig out next to the boat and hung him for the day. Hooked up the boat and were fishing by noon.

L2H, This wasn't Running Deer. At least I don't think it was, this ranch is only a day hunting ranch, no camping. I just called to make reservations, they don't hunt it on Monday. So, next week i'm going to hit it up on Wednesday.

Not Running Deer. Mel give me a call before you go and I'll give you the 411 on where they are hanging out. I actually wish i lived a little further South for the Pig Hunting. WU has great ranches in Tehachapi, Collinga and San Luis Obispo for you Southern call guys.

Ah......the RC. I've never been to that one. Jerry, did you guys see a bunch of them or just one?

Have you guys been to the new Maddux? I'd figure there be lots of hogs there.

I don't think Maddux has been producing, at least the reports are not saying anything. I figured it would of been good.

I've seen it where check-in and check-out cards on a property never got picked up for a couple months. So sometimes those reports are not always current.

Great hog, congrats to you. Whereabouts was this? Unfortunately the hog activity up here in Central Oregon is pretty abysmal. There are pockets of them though. I might get serious about them, now that duck, pheasant and chukar season are through.

Maddux report cards are checked on a regular basis as it is very close to the Hill Ranch. It has not been producing but now that we are getting closer to spring it will start to heat up as the feed in the irrigated fields begins to come up. The owner of the Hill Ranch has the lease to run the cattle on the Maddux ranch. The pigs are there right now but talking with the cow hand people are not hunting the brush and they are hanging out in it. The Hill Ranch is doing very well. We only saw this pig, but we hunted less than 45 minutes. There have been multiple pigs seen in the particular area that we shot this one with shots missed and others that have just decided to let them walk.

jerryt,
I don't know about other people, but my hunting experiences has proved that the short hunts, the race against time hunts, and the "I don't feel like hunting or heck let's just give a try" hunts are the ones that always produced the best results. The hunts that I have all the time in world to plan and can be out for serveral days to weeks are the ones that I most likely come home empty handed.
