Going pig hunting this weekend and was wondering how the rain affects the movement of pigs here in CA. Thanks.

I went hunting once while it rained on and off. It was slow to say the least. Hogs rely on thier senses. Take that away and my experience is that they hunker down. But if I had a planned trip, I'd go anyway hoping to stir something up. That is exactly why though, I do not plan trips. I go when conditions are advantageous. I realize most people can't do that. Either can I but I manage anyhow. When I want to hunt hogs everything else waits. Every hog hunt but the one I did in the rain, I have done has been on a moments notice. For me anyhow, it works O.K. That one trip I did go when it rained I did get a hog the next morning after. It was the only hog we saw on the entire trip. Thjankfully, I have a guide that understands and has stand ins if he can't accomodate me.

I have never hunted pigs in the rain, however I have hunted them right after a major downpour and it was a lot of fun. You can really see the pigs movement after a good rain. I also think it makes them a little more active after a nice rain and the area is pretty wet. Just my 2 cents.. Good luck on your hunt.

Here at camp roberts rain is the best hunting, all the hogs will be in large groups moving along the river. But you do have to bust them out of the thick stuff. this is just my experince 7 years hunt camp bob.

I have found that the hogs do not seem to be too bothered by the elements, including rain. In fact, some of my best hunts have been during storms.

I would theorize that this is due to any of the following ideas:
*Hogs come out to feed on the earthworms and other ground dwelling insects that must come to the surface when the soil is saturated.
*Hogs, like most other animals, are photosensitive; their level of activity is influenced by the stage of the sun and moon. During storms or periods of dark cloud cover, the lack of sunlight undoubtedly gives the hogs a greater sense of safety.
*The hogs come out to root in the soft soil.

I agree with Rifleman's assessment.

It's been my experience that hogs are not bothered by the rain to much. However. it sure makes it easy to tell what rooting and tracks are fresh durring and right after a rain. Good Luck!

I hunted fhl 4 yr's ago and it was pouring rain and only a few guy's went out in it and by the end of the day there were 4 hog's hanging at the check-in station. so i would go along with what other's have said about the rain.

Yup. What they said. Plus, in the rain, they can't catch your scent very well.

About the only problem I've had is the mud in some areas: You get what feels like five tons of cement stuck on each foot, then yer traction disappears.

Hogs dont have sweat glands like we do , so thats why they seem so nocturnal , hot sun and big black boars on public land dont go together. Thats why they like that cool layer of black mud and some cool shade come summer. The biggest buck , hog , steelhead and turkey I ever caught captured or killed was on rainy days. No bad weather just bad gear.

Yep, hogs do just fine in the rain. We've some of our best hunts during rainfalls,,,

Woulda likely been better if the hunters had been able to gear up for the rain as good as the hogs did,,,lol,,,
