Ramona angler Bolivar makes rookie mistake

CLEAR LAKE – Gabe Bolivar learned an important lesson yesterday in the final day of the CITGO Bassmaster California Western Open.
Bolivar, 27, of Ramona, had Stockton's Dave Gliebe, a 27-year veteran of the pro tour, move within 10 feet of where he was fishing. Still a rookie on the pro tour, Bolivar didn't raise a fuss over Gliebe invading his spot, but he could have.
Instead, Bolivar watched as Gliebe flipped tube baits into the tules and hauled in a bag of fish so big – 23 pounds 10 ounces for five bass – it catapulted him to second place, earning a $35,000 boat and $3,450 in cash. It was his 45th boat, to add to his two trucks and Cadillac, all won as a pro angler.
Bolivar, who had been fishing the spot with spinnerbaits, finished 27th and won $1,170 and is still looking for his first boat.
"I was that close to getting a bag of fish that would have been a breakthrough for me," Bolivar said. "It was a big lesson."
Mark Tyler of Concord won the tournament and $45,350 for 48 pounds, 14 ounces. And local tackle shop angler Bob Higgins won the non-boater division.
Curtis Nichols of Escondido finished 13th and won $759 in the non-boater division, and former San Diegan Dean Rojas was 42nd in the pro division and won $830.
