On my way home from vacation friday, I got a call from Flatbroke. Seems my father in law and his friend hunted the dogs that morning. They got a nice boar, it was posted a couple days ago by Flatbroke. My daughter had a game Saturday morning, so we waited until Sunday morning to go. Flatbroke, myself, and the other two guys were on site and ready to go at first light. We put two dogs out, within ten minutes the dogs were gone. After about another five minutes they were bayed up. A short drive up the road, put us about 300 yards above them. We bailed out of the truck, and turned out four more dogs. A short run down hill put us on the hog. The dogs were working great. We sat back took some video, and enjoyed the moment. A couple of photos, and then a quick pistol shot finished the deal. Although he was not a monster hog, he was a mean hog, willing to stand his ground. It was nice to watch the dogs work as a team. Each one helping out when the other needed it. These are all young dogs that are turning on great. If some one will tell me how to post video, I will.

nice action shots. Are your dogs holding or just nipping to get him to stop and fight? Do you find the chest plates slow your dog down much in the thick stuff? It really is a good idea to put plates on your dogs but I've always thought that it would be really awkward for the dog to maneuver when there's not much room. Every hunting dog should at least have a cut collar though.

EvBouret, the dogs will catch smaller hogs, and sows. The larger ones, they will just bay and bite, to keep them stopped. This pig was just bayed, until the shot was fired. When the hog fell, the dogs caught him. He got up to fight for a minute, but the dogs stayed holding on at that point. The vests we run are very flexible, like a car hart jacket. The dogs gets used to them, then they do not hinder them much. The vests are standard, they come in three sizes, but each one is custom fitted, to suit the dogs build and the way they run. Once this is done it becomes a part of them. The heavy leather vests the Bull dogs wear do restrict movement. The only time they can be a real problem, is when it is hot. They can make the dogs over heat.

The yellow Black Mouth Cur pictured on the top left of the shots with the caught hog is a young dog that bigwom got from Bob Fogel. Its doing great. has alot of drive and desire to hunt hogs. One of the easiest starting dogs i have seen.

Bigworm dont get too used to me waiting for you to finish playing softball,

Hey Bigworm & Flatbroke,
Besides the hogs you are catching, are you seeing many hogs out in the open?

No Chopper, the hogs seem to be brushed up. Really making the dogs work for them.

Great Job Guys.

Joel, Gunny the Catahoula I got from you is doing outstanding. He has been on some hogs in the pen and he is really developing confidence. I even have him herding some cattle for me. The other day this cow turned on me and before you know it Gunny was in between us and her going her mary way. It was awesome to see; just a proud dad.

Thanks,
Jess.

Chopper, nothing out in the open this year. Strange they way they are always moving, and holding tight in the brush. No rooting in open country, but get in the brush and there is sign. I could see if they were getting pressure, but thats not the case. It seems to be that way in other places too. There is still some acorns up high, and with the ground being wet, they don't have to leave the brush for food. That will change soon, spring is always good for seeing them out in the open, the green grass helps too.

Jess, I am glad Gunny is working out good. I will be starting mine soon. They all are showing a lot of promise. I expected as much, considering the quality of the hunting blood they came from. You saw all the photos of mom and the hogs she's caught, they have a good chance to be great dogs. Keep me posted, and keep getting Gunny out. I think it is great you are getting him out. They can't learn anything on a chain, or in a pen.

Good job and nice Hog.

Bigworm, and Flatbroke
What brand and type of vest/chest protection are you using on your dogs ? I have a couple year old Walker Hounds that I want to get on pigs. Also when your out with the dogs do you rig them up and have a strike dog or do you just road them, or drive and release them on sign of fresh tracks ?
