Rancher removed from state advisory board

5/22/03

NM Business Weekly

A northern New Mexico rancher has been removed from the New Mexico State Land Office agircultural advisory board effective immediately.

Commissioner of Public Lands Patrick Lyons notified Dave Sanchez, ranch manager at the Chavez Creek Ranch in Brazos, on Wednesday of his dismissal from the board.

Sanchez admitted that he had gunned down numerous elk feeding on ranch property.

"The State Land Office does not condone the manner in which Sanchez is 'protecting' his property," said Lyons, in a statement. "The Department of Game and Fish has made every effort to provide alternatives to landowners dealing with animals that depredate property."

State Land officials said they expect to find a replacement for Sanchez by the end of the month.

The State Land Office manages about 3,400 agricultural leases on nearly 9 million acres in New Mexico. Leasseess primarily use the land for livestock grazing, although some acreage is leased for open space and conservation efforts.
