Well it's less than 2 weeks for CR to open for hogs, and I'll be taking the boys (12 & 14) out for their first big game hunt ever. CR is a great place for a learning hunt; easy going and a variety of hunting methods can be used in a single trip. Two years ago, my daughter (12 at the time) and I each brought home the pork, on her first hunting trip.
Yesterday, the boys got some range-time in on their recently sporterized M-44s. They are confident and ready to go! (I can't believe that those $69 Big-5 specials shoot so well)

Fantastic!
We'll be hunting Saturday & Sunday, and camping at the tracks. Although, if we get lucky on Saturday, we'll head-out early, so I can get a jump on the processing.
We'll be in a silver Tucson, with a rack (designed especially to carry lots o' pork!) plugged into the trailer hitch. Don't hesitate to say hey! And if you want to hear my boys giggle like girls, call me BLASTMASTER, 'cause they are yet to be exposed to JHO!

A buddy of mine and I were planning
<
on hunting at FHL over memorial day weekend but I've been calling this weekend and can only get the machine which says the hunting is closed until further notice. If this base is closed we would probably like to try and make it to Camp Roberts.

I have read that it gets pretty crowded at CR on the weekends that they open it to hunting, do they limit hunters and assign hunting areas like FHL. If if is packed is there enough decent hunting area open to find some areas to yourself? I haven't been to either base but I am looking forward to it since it has got to be better than Los Padres NF around Cachuma Lake.
<
I have been there almost every weekend the past 3-4 months trying for my first hog and I have yet to see a pig on public land.

bjake21 there is good hunting in camp roberts for hog ive been hunting it since 1992 and if you hunt camp roberts you'll see that more people usually hunt the river. we usually hunt 2 and 3 and come across less people.

Sounds good. Where ever we go it looks like my brother will be up at Lake Naciemento this weekend so we will get in some wakeboarding, fishing and
<
as well. I can't wait it should be a great weekend.
<
And hopefully I'll see some of ya JHOers as well.

Is Camp Roberts as rifle or are there some shotgun/archery areas as well?

bjake,

There are archery/shotgun/ml only areas. They are closer to the check in station near the 101fwy. As you get further out it opens up to include rifle.

Good luck.

Quick question for you all. I never camped at the tracks before. Do you think I will have any trouble leaving a tent up during the day, while we're hunting? Do other people leave their tents there unattended?

Blastmaster,

Two years back some one had a "break in" on there tent and some stuff were stolen, so don't leave any valuables there.

I've left my tent up countless times and never had a problem. I take all my gear with me though. It doesn't look like I'm going to make this trip. You boys shoot the hell out of them for me. Too many houses going up around here and I have too much work to leave.

Have a couple for me. If I can get away for a day I'll call your cell Gunner. I still have your #. Good luck guys.

Fantastic! Thanks for the advise fellas! I'll go ahead and put up the tent for the duration, but keep any valuables in the truck.
Maybe I can find a WARNING - GUARD RATTLER ON DUTY sign, and booby-trap the tent zipper with one of those rubberband-powered-playingcard-rattling-devices

Good luck, and great job getting your kids involved.
Camp Bob is a great place, BUT it will be crowded. Look for areas away from other vehicles, as the pigs could be anywhere this year. If you are rifle hunting then you will be unable to hunt along the river or hwy 101.
And don't leave valuables in your tent, lock them in your rig out of sight. I have hunted here for over 20 years and have not had a single problem, but that was before word got out and all the LA people started coming up here.
Have fun and be safe...

Thanks!
Actually, I've been hunting CR pretty successfully for several years now, but this will be the first time we've stayed at the tracks.
