As everyone has heard Tejon Ranch will be closed for hunting for awhile for a DFG investigation into the alleged poaching of mountain lions. So it was just pure luck that the hunt that Kelly (Kravnit on JHO) put together for Jan. 27-29th was the last hog hunt allowed until the investigation is completed. The word is hopefully around May, but no one knows for sure. I kind of feel obligated to give a detailed report for all of our buddy's on JHO that had their hunts cancelled. So here goes. I would "like" to make everyone feel better and say that "you didn't miss anything" but that just wouldn't be the truth. The truth is that Kelly and his buddy's know the ranch really well and probably average 5-10 hunts there a year. So it was almost like a guided hunt! On top of that Kelly is a personal trainer so his motivational skills are lets say: impressive. Something like a drill Sargent in the U.S.P.C. (United States Pig Corps.) By friday night Kelly and Bill had two pigs down, gutted skinned and packed on ice. The next morning at 5:30 they were the first ones up to help me Pasqual and his 18 year old son get our pigs. By first light we had spotted a dozen running hogs and gave chase but no luck. Within 45 minutes we were glassing another ridge and Sgt. Kelly and Lt. Bill spot a group of what looked like 4 nice sized black dots moving to a beading area. We make our approach and on the way Kelly spots "another" group of hogs bedded down on a hillside just 75 yds from us. We stop the Razors and start glassing and figuring out where we can take a shot when Kelly notices that two of them look pregnant and the other has piglets running around her so we decide to move on. As we get to where we had spotted the 4 pigs from the far ridge we realize that there are more hogs here than originally estimated. By probably about 20! So, Bill stays up on the road with a radio to guide us and Me, Pasqual, his son and Kelly start the stalk about 350 yds down into a hillside ravine. As we are nearing the pigs Bill sees them start to get jittery and starts yelling in the radio "shoot, shoot they know your there!" I'm not too sure what happened next because I went a little too low and didn't see one pig! Next thing I know I hear four shots go off in rapid succession and hear Kelly yelling What are you waiting for? Shoot him! I come over to see two big azzed sows laying on the ground and smiles. They were like"why didn't you shoot?" "I said shoot at what?" "I didn't see anything!" Kelly says there were 2 dozen pigs right here! None of them ran past you? I said, not a one. OH well. So we proceeded to gut and carry two big pigs almost straight up to the razors. Kelly almost lost his off the edge of the ridge (but that's another story)
Saturday afternoon I decide to go to another part of the ranch to see if I can glass up some new pork. I am glassing an opposite hillside not seeing anything when I notice a few steer way out on a ledge. I don't really pay them any attention until I start glassing in that area and notice that it is super steep terrain! I start to think, could those be pigs?...no way they are too big and there are red calves with them. Finally I glass over at the cattle just to ease my mind and "holy crap those are HOGS!" there were two big black ones that had to be 4-500 lbs! that's why I thought they were steers. Then there were half a dozen smaller red ones that I thought were calves! I immediately start to drive my jeep to as close as I dare across the ravine. I get to within 350 yds and start out on foot...(end of part 1) to be continued... 100_4611.jpg 100_4610.jpg 100_4609.jpg 100_4603.jpg 100_4613.jpg

Krad great write up. Well guys it was quite a trip, too bad it will be the last for quite awhile. Over the weekend I probably saw over 350 pigs. Seemed like all my special spots were holding pigs and lots of them. And for all you big cat lovers we found several fresh tracks in the mud on opposite sides of the ranch...and different sizes. The ranch was in great shape roads weren't too bad and the razors and rangers did an outstanding job of getting us there and back. Here re some of the pics from the weekend.

This giant sow was 373lbs before we gutted her. And there was a giant red sow with her that was much bigger. Just imagine what's going to happen with the ranch shut down and zero pressure!!!!!

2nd pic the razor at work.

Wow, those are massive hogs. Congrats. Was wondering though, Tejon doesn't have a policy against going off road?

Those are some narrow roads up there and if a truck is coming your direction and your ride is blocking road. Well he who is in the truck is going to be very pissed off......so we got off the side on an old road and it was so soft that we couldn't pop back over ridge.

Haven't ever been there but have heard about the "hills" there. Lucky your rig didn't wind up way down the hill.

PART II
As I park the jeep as close as I dare, being super stealth getting my gun out. Out of nowhere on a high mountain road here comes this guy in a white jeep. "Have you seen any pigs?" He says. I look down the way he came which is why I stopped my jeep and started walking. "Not any more" I keep going but not in "super stealth" mode. I can see as I am walking down into the thick stuff that across the ravine the pigs are gone. I still make my way untill the spot where they were is staight across from me by about 160 yds. I sit down and just try to figure out which way they went and what I am going to do next when I hear song oinks. I listen real hard thinking it might just be my imagination. I then hear all kinds of squeals and grunts and a few seconds later three hogs come walking out of the underbrush next to where I saw the others disappear. They were all (about a dozen) hiding right there! These three must have gotten kicked out because they were too fat! haha... So I follow the three until they disappear into a lower bush. Now I just wait. After about 45 mins to and hour I see some movement below me in the creek bed. There are 3-4 pigs walking a path along the creek and I notice the last one is about twice the size of the first two and I draw a bead. I follow it till it stops in a clearing 75 yards below me and I let the 7mm rem mag go. Big BOOM in this quiet little area and all the other pigs start scrambling around. One little boar runs right up to me straight up the hill until he bumps into the end of my rifle and I start laughing at him. He quickly turned and git! I could hear the one I shot rolling and crashing through the brush on it's way down to the creek bed about thirty yards so I knew it was dead. I hike back up to the jeep. Drive down to the creek bed and walked in the couple miles to where the 250 lb sow was laying next to the creek. I was a little bumbed as I gutted her that she was pregnant. We had turned down some shots earlier not wanting to take any pregnant or wet sows, but from what I have seen Tejon is NOT hurting for pigs! I walk back the couple of miles to the jeep to drive back to get help to drag this 200 lb sack of ham out of there. I really want to thank Kelly's buddies for helping me drag this pig out. I would have still been there! Had an awsome time and hope they get it open soon because I am going to ask for a spring pass next year for christmas!

Congrats Kevin!! That may be the last hunt Tejon allows. Too bad Monk wasn't there to help drag out that '200 lb sack of ham'.
