I feel ya Onetrack!! ever since I filled my tag I can't seem to get that day out of mind. I play the shot over and over in my head and how very lucky I was to have my son shoulder to shoulder with me as we took those hogs.
I remember that mine dropped instantly to the ground and my son's took an extra shot to put it down but the look on that kids face was priceless.
We hiked up and down those canyons for two days straight and you all know that isn't an easy task by any means so when the moment came the gratification was priceless.

I get this weird feeling initially when I take an animal, it's almost like I feel bad. After I have it skinned it and I look at all the meat I will eat that feeling all go's away. I guess I never been one just to sit outside the camper and shoot squirrels or other varmints for the fun of just killing something. I know the coyotes appreciate having dead squirrels all over the place but I don't believe in taking an animal just for the mount or one I wont eat. I could tell my son didn't share that sorrow feeling by the way he was jumping up and down

Larry, I looked at the Barnes X website and didn't see anything for my Weatherby Vanguard.... I have to shoot ammo made for Weatherby exclusivley (so it says on the gun). I do have some Federal ammo for my gun in 180gr but I never really see anything else availible. If you have a link I would appreciate it. Weatherby ammo is also very expensive.

I am checking my schedule and trying to do both the March and May hunts. I will send in my applications tomorrow.

Man, Rich, You're killin' me here! Hmm, should I book another hunt? I'm doing the same thing with my pig, re-living the day, the shot and not so much the drag out, but that is part of the game.

It's likely I won't make the March or May hunts. But good luck to all that go and Rich let me know how you do.

Tim, If you could make it that would sweet. This time we could all camp close together and get to know one another even better. I decided to put Tejon on the companies expense list and let my accountant figure out how to write it off.
I can see where it will get expensive funding the hunts yourself, especially numerous ones.

A lot of those guys on the hunt including yourself all live close to the ranch so it's not as big of a deal as driving 260 miles. We make it from the ranch gate to my driveway in 4hr 10min which isn't' bad considering we were dragging that Jeep behind.

We just put the Jeep in the shop yesterday... Total damages were $3000 to the Trans and Transfer case.

That will teach my brother to read the owners manual before towing his new hunting jeep across the state.

Maybe for the best if we don't go until May but I sure prefer to walk up and down mountains in the cold vs heat.

I agree. I like to earn the kill. Seriously, I'd rather walk for two days and kill something, than kill one in the road in the first hour. Although, it's nice to walk for two days, then kill one in the road! That's why it's fun to hold out for a certain animal. Be it a big buck, or a big boar, or even the perfect meat hog. It just makes the hunt more fun for me to drag it out.

Tejon is awesome. Once you're inside, it's a great feeling to be on your own. It's expensive though.

You guys did outstandingly well. Happy for you. And, being with you son must have be incredible. I have about six more years until my girls can hunt. I can hardly wait.

I was camped next to you and provided the oak rounds for your fire. I was hunting solo until Sunday morning when I hooked up with the older man and the younger guy driving the red SuperDuty. We hunted hard in one of my favorite spots (the two I met had never hunted the Tejon before, so I helped them out) and got in to at least 30 or 40 pigs by noon. One of us shot a nice 200lb dry sow way back in a canyon. It took all three of us over two hours to get that hog out on a sled. My legs are still hurting!

Vinswitch, Tim (Switch) here. Eric was the wood gatherer. I remember you. As I remember it the two you helped out with the Sunday hog had some rather questionable 'rope' for dragging. Thanks for the fire wood. You were one of many that made the trip a real pleasure. As I stated in the story, I had a few helping hands getting my pig back to camp and gutted. We in turn helped Ironworker get unstuck and also helped the father and son team you hunted with regarding places to go on the ranch.

One of the gentlemen that helped me with my pig, returned a short time later with a beer. I again thanked him for the beer and the help. He in turn stated simply, "Hey, that's what its all about, the hunting is just a bonus" How true!

There should be no reason why your gun has to shoot Weatherby ammo. Is it a .300 winchester mag or a .300 weatherby mag? Regardless, proper ammo for the gun, made by any manufacturer, should be fine. I think what you might be referring to is the accuracy guarantee that Weatherby has. They claim that the rifle will shoot good groups if you use Weatherby factory ammo. But that does not mean that it is unsafe to shoot any other brand. As long as the headstamp is marked to match your chamber you shoud be fine. Shoot several brands and see what your rifle likes best. If in doubt, call Weatherby.

Hi, The gun I have is a Weatherby Vanguard .300 Mag. The day I bought my rifle I stopped by a gun store for a couple boxes of ammo and the guy behind the counter asked if my Weatherby could shoot other ammo than Weatherby, Hell I didn't know, so I went out to the truck grabbed the rifle brought it in and the store owner told me that I could only shoot Weatherby ammo. I guess he didn't mean only ammo made by Weatherby but that the ammo had to be made especially for the Weatherby .300 Mag, at least that's how I understood it.
On the side of my rifle it says ":Use Weatherby .300 ammo only"

I do have a box of Remington premium ammo for the gun in 180gr. that clearly says the name Weatherby 300 on the box.

Ironworker, throw out the gun brand and focus on the caliber. Are you shooting a .300 weatherby mag or a .300 winchester mag?

There are other manufacturers that make rifles chambered for weatherby calibers but I'm not sure if weatherby makes rifles chambered for anything other than weatherby. Maybe some of the more knowing can pipe in here.

Now it is starting to make sense. You have a caliber that is called a .300 Weatherby Mag. You must shoot ammo that uses that exact nomenclature. The brand does not matter, however. As you have found, there are several different companies that make ammo for the .300 Weatherby mag round.

What makes this confusing is that there is also the .300 Winchester Magnum. But it is a totally different round. What the person was trying to tell you is to make sure you are not trying to shoot 300 win mag ammo in your .300 weatherby. They are two entirely different cartridges.

What makes it even more confusing is the Weatherby Vanguard rifle comes chambered in both the .300 win mag and the .300 weatherby mag. (yes, Chopper they do make rifles in non-weatheby cals too) Your's appears to be a .300 Weatherby mag. It should be indicated on the barrell.

You can use whatever brand (Federal, Remington, Hornady, Winchester, AND Weatherby) as long as the cartridge is specifically the .300 Weatherby Magnum.

OK i went to weatherbys site.
they offer a .300 weatherby Magnum which is a .300magnun, which is a .300 magnum, and this is the same as a .300 magnum.
They also offer a .300 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) which is an altogether different physically cartridge.

I may be wrong.................................but I don't think so! a .300 magnum is a .300 magnum by any name unless it's a .300 Short magnum again (WSM)

In any weatherby model there is no such critter as a winchester .300.

Now in the .270 there's a 270 weatherby mag, a 270 WSM, and a 270 winchester.

there are only the two cartridges magnum and short magnum in the 300 calibre.
Do not try to load 300 magnum cartridges in a WSM rifle!
Conversely do not load 300WSM cartridges in a 300 magnum rifle!
Use only the ammunition specified for that rifle as stated on the barrel.

I hope this adds to the confusion.

They are not the same.

There are also .300 WSM, .300 SAUM and .300 Ultra Mags.

All different critters!

It does not matter who makes the rifle, you use the ammo that it says to use and that is usually stamped on the side of the barrel.

GEEZ some of you guys scare me.

Loading the wrong ammo in a gun can kill someone. ALWAYS make sure the headstamp on the cartridge matches EXACTLY what is written on the side of the barell. Custom rifles may not have the caliber stamped into the barell.

Here is a pic straight of Weatherby's site...I picked any VANGUARD rifle (dont know which one you have). Listed in the red box is all the calibers that are offered for this gun. PLEASE note that their IS a

.300 Winchester Short Magnum (also called) 300 WSM or .300 Win Short

.300 Winchester Magnum (also called) .300 WinMag

.300 Weatherby Magnuam (also called) .300 WBY Mag or .300 Weatherby

As stated ALL 3 ARE DIFFERENT ROUNDS..AND ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE!

Here is a good example...

EXAMPLE - You own a Remington 700 XCR chambered for .300 WSM.

#1 you dont have to shoot REMINGTION ammo just because the gun is a remington.

#2 You dont have to shoot WINCHESTER ammo just becasue the caliber is a Winchester Short Magnum.

You can use ANY manufacturer of ammo ( federal, remington, winchester, black hills, Norma etc etc ) AS LONG as the ammo says it is .300 WSM caliber.

I was pretty sure I understood the gun store clerk and I did. I can only shoot Weatherby .300 Mag ammo in my gun and that's all I have ever used.
