rifle choice.

I put in for the New Mexico Elk draw with some friends, my first Elk hunt. My friends have hunted the area many times before and recommended a rifle capable of 500 yard shots. Area 16A and 16B. Of several rifles in my safe the four choices I have ready to go are.

1, Montana Rifleman 300 H&H mag w/ Ziess 3x10x44 scope @9.4 lbs

2, CZ 550 fs 9.3 x 62 w/ Leupold 2.5 x 8 x 36 VXIII @9.4 lbs launches 250 grain barnes TSX's @ 2700 fps and is MOA with 20 inch barrel

3, Kimber longmaster 308 winchester w/ Leupold 3 x 10 x 40 VXIII @ 8.2 lbs

4, TC Encore 375 H&H w/ Burris Safari 1.75 x 5 x 32 @ 7.8 lbs this is sub moa with a 235 JSP @ 3100 fps

I also have both a 270 Remmington 721 and a Voere Shikar in 30-06 however they need a little smithing at the moment.

Which would you take along and why. Choices 1 thru 4 all shoot sub moa and i'm equallyconfortable with them all.

I'd go with the 308 with the 375 as a back-up because they're the lightest rifles you have. Elk hunting usually means a lot of hiking unless you've got horses.

500 yard shots? wow.

i would put the VXIII on the .375 and take it.

good luck with the draw, my 3rd choice is next door to yours...all archery.

Fix the 30-06 becuase you probably will not shoot 500yards. And fix the .270 in case you have to shoot 500 yards. This way you will have all of your guns working giving you even more choices next year.

500 yards is an insane distance. You will have shots at that range, but my money says you can close at least 200 yards off of that distance. Just because you can see them doesn't mean you have to shoot them way out there.

That Montana .300 would be my first choice from what you've listed, with the CZ next. As someone mentioned, they'll be kinda heavy. Honestly, though, get the -06 smithed and use that, and never look back.

Ditto what speck said, with a touch of Hatchet 1. Go with who brung you to the dance. And get the 06 dailed.

Thanks guys for the input. I doubt I would ever take a 500 yard shot. 300 no problem, I'm comfortable with them all. Will call the smith this week. Taking an Elk with Dads gifted 06 would be cool. Oh , I just picked up a Rem 700 adl in 7mm Rem mag. We'll see how she shoots and spend some time at the bench loading some A Frames, Barnes,and some E-tips. Still shooting the bow, could draw an archery tag after all this rifle talk.

7mm hands down. 375 H&H is a great elk cartridge, but you'd really be lobbin' 'em in at 500.
