How about a Savage in .308?

Savage makes some pretty nice rifles at a reasonable price. Their AccuTrigger is hard to beat in a factory rifle.

With the .308 you have a lot of loads to select from, more than most other calibers. If recoil is still an issue, install a muzzle break. I put one on my Lazzeroni Warbird and it tamed it quite a bit.

fishhead is right on with the savage.Decelerator pad by pachmyr is great. Depends how much she's shootin at the range. With factory 308 you still take a pretty good jaring. She will feel it the next day.The beautiful thing is, is you can load your 308's down to low velocity low recoil for practice at the range. It's like shootin a .22 rifle.Light gun for hikin, and heavy barrel heavy gun for bench. Does your wife know that your really buying this gun for you?HA...HA...HA!!!!!!GOOD DAY !HAWK.

A 7mm-08 is a necked down .308 it is flatter shooting but for versatility the .308 will handle the same with a larger diameter bullet. For elk .308, for all around the 7mm-08 is almost as flat shooting as a .270

For an all purpose rifle/food processor, go with Barrett! :bag-on-head:
