I may have my first ever chance to hunt wild hog next week in Del Rio Tx. My question is do I use my 12 guage with slugs or my .243 winchester? These are currently my only options.
Thanks for your opinions

Both will do the job if you do your part. The question becomes what are you more accurate with at the ranges you expect? Only you can answer that question.

Both will do the job, But I would go with the 243 with good shot placement.
Good Luck

Hate to be this ignorant but no, I assumed shot placement would be the same. The only experience I have had is with domestic hogs at close range(22 in the head).

The heart/lungs are just a little bit forward and higher than a deer, not too much different. But you're more likely to hit a shoulder, and they're tougher. So I'd take the .243 but get a nice tough bullet like a 100GR nostler partition (Federal loads one).

Hey there,,,bout the best way to explain shot placement on a hog (fer me anyways),,is what i tell my hunters (who're accustomed to the sweet spot on deer and think it's the same spot),,,

...is to think where the you'd aim on a deer and move a bit forward toward the head.,,,and then up toward to ear just a bit...

BTW,,,I was out with a youth one time and a big boar hog presented himself,,,broadside and nice shootin' distance,,,[smile]...

I whispered to the youth..."you remember where i told you to shoot, don't you?"...

He looked at me with this glazed-over "HUH?" in his eyes,,,,lol,,,

I looked over,,,turned my head a bit,,,and pointed at an area just below my ears,,,down toward my shoulders,,,

,,,,and, then, he took aim...[smile]...

That younster dropped that big ol ugly texas boar hog in its tracks,,,and, wow!,,,he shore was proud!!,,

We wuza high-fivin' all the way back to camp,,,lol,,,

Shore was fun watching him take that hog,,,,it was his first!!,,

Here's the field photo i took that day,,,[smile]...
