Good morning. I recently booked a hog hunt (my first) with my dad and was wondering if anybody had a recommendation for a rifle range. I purchased a scoped 30-30 a few years ago and would like to practice and have it sighted-in correctly. My dad has a 7 mag that hasn't been fired since an elk hunt 25 years ago so his scope may need some adjusting, also.

A friend of mine suggested West End gun club; however, I believe it is private -plus it's pretty far from where I live (San Clemente). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Rob

I'm from SC too. I go to the LA Range on Lil Tujunga Canyon Rd. best range in the state! I go on Thursdays (SWAT day) because it is a light crowd of mostly ex-mil & LEOs. Very cool crowd. $8 for the day. Range is 700 yards with steel pig targets. Wanna ride? I usually leave around 6-7am and have breakfast there.

Thursday is 1/2 price day.... In the afternoon, they sometimes close the "rifle side" (Left benches) for LEO training but you still can shoot out to 100 yds on the other side so it is wise to get there in the AM.

Bruce, when you are going up there, let me know. I might meet you there depending on my schedule. It is a quick 25-30 minute run from Santa Monica, home of California's most famous ex-mountain lion.

Here (as Bruce said)...

About the only places I know of in So. Cal. There's a couple of indoor ranges that you could shoot those rifles at but they're only 25 yard ranges. That's okay if your working up a load but too short for properly sighting in or effective practice IMHO.

I'm going next Thursday the 31st to finish dialing in a few scopes. I have never been asked to leave on Thursday in 4 years. Usually the SWAT guys number under 6 so they don't send us packin'. In fact, I have found the Thursday crowd to be uniquely helpful. When I had trouble getting good groups outta my 45-70 Govt Mauser custom...one of the ex-LEOs there shot it a few times, took it apart, sanded a section of the stock in a very specific spot, put it back together, took three more shots and handed it back me saying, "You're good now." It took him 15 minutes or so and the darn thing held a nice group ever since. There is no substitute for experience. Most of the really good info I have received regarding scopes, ammo and problems with groups have come from my Thursday tutors. I am having issues with some of the non-lead ammo so that's what I'm trying to work thru now. They seem more suseptible to fliers than other ammo I use.

I will never go to Burro again, the RMs are way too casual. Had a guy point a loaded, chambered rifle directly at me...I screamed at him and the RM did nothing. Plus the place is a dump compared to LA.

I vote for Angeles too. The biggest problem with West End is first its all dirt and not the setup that Angeles has and.....Randy the rangemaster. I'm not going to comment further.

Angeles has one side that goes to 100 yds and the other that you can put up targets to really far but 200 yds is expected. They also have iron hanging out to 600 yds if you think you really got yourself sighted in.

Bruce, you said: "I'm going next Thursday the 31st to finish dialing in a few scopes."

I'll plan on meeting you there. What time do you usually show up. I'm also sending you a PM to ask for your mobile phone so we can connect. The only phone I have for you is the trader one which is "on vacation"...

You guys are very helpful. Thanks.

Bruce,
Thanks for the offer to carpool. We're going to make an effort to get out to the range earlier in the week so I respectfully decline.
