I got a .308 saiga and voted .308 AR-10 since that was the closest option.
A 45/70 would be fun but I dont know whats up with Marlin right now.
I stopped pig hunting when the lead ban took effect since I used a .303 and there ain't any non-lead hunting ammo for it.
When I was buying my first rifle I was told that if you are going to own only 1 rifle, 30.06 is the way to go. I still have only one rifle and have killed all of my pigs and deer with it.
I like my Browning BLR .308. Shorter barrel is excellent in the brush and lighter weight for long treks. The .308 round works great for thin skinned big game. I also like its lever action for a quick second shot if needed or if a boar happens to charge after you.
None of the above. May favorite hog rifles in the safe are: Browning A-bolt in .325WSM topped with a 4x14 Leopold, a Sako Pro-Hunter in .376 Sako topped with a 1.5 to 4 Burris, a .450 Bushmaster upper on a Mega lower with a 9 round mag and BB, and for giggles a .450/.400 NE 3" using 300gr. Hornady jacketed bullets.
Since handguns weren't in the criteria, I won't go into them.
I shoot a .270. WoW can't believe it didn't get listed. I got 2 of them 1 with a 3X9X40 and 1 with 3X9X50. I shoot everything from dogs to hogs with them.
The .30-06 is probably the most versatile of the mix with loads from 150gn - 220gn. Anything from .270 on up is more than adequate with proper bullet placement. I've taken pigs with a .270WSM bolt action with 130gn TSX, .308 lever action with 150gn TTSX, .30-06 bolt action with 168gn TTSX and .300 Wby bolt action with 168gn TTSX. I'm gunning to take my next pig at Tejon with my Austin & Halleck 420 inline muzzleloader using .50 cal Barnes 290gn T-EZ sabots on top of 100gn Blackhorn 209. I fully expect to drop it where it stands with that bullet and load.
Well, I didn't see my rifle on the choices. I am going out for the first time this sunday (12-18-2011) with my son. I am taking my 'ol Remington 742 Woodsmaster 30-06 semi-auto. It's a certified Deer taker. If I get one, I'll let you know! If I miss the 1st time, hopefully I can squeeze a 2nd off quick enough. ig-laughing:
+1 to the 30-06 with 3-9x to answer "What rifle would you use to hunt (fill in the blank) in North America". If you had to just have one, that's the gun to get.
J Y Jones did just that. Search books for One Man One Rifle One Land. He killed one of ever North American game animal with one rifle ..... a 30-06. I have more than one, but 30-06 in 165 gr is all you really need in north america.
