I took my shotgun to FHL with these sabot loads. my buddy missed at 50 feet, 3 times in a row. I think it was that the barrel was not rifled and the sabot just flew out randomly. I have heard of rifled shotgun barrels but never had a need for them. anyone have any experience with this topic. Im intrested.

Yep, sabots are a no-go in smooth barrels. What gun and sabot were you shooting? Do you know if you have a rifled barrel (it's obvious if you look through it, unloaded of course)?

If it is rifled, shoots some targets to check sights. A scope is even better. Some rifled barrel and sabot combinations are extremely accurate past 100 yards.

Rifled shotgun barrels are the bomb! With todays barrel technology and a good matched sabot round, no reason you can't shoot deer and hogs at 150 yds. All the deer I've shot in the last 7-8 years have been with rifled shotguns.

That solves that mystery, thanks.:thumbs up2:
I am useing my rem 870 wingmaster pump with federal premium, 300 grain *Trophy copper sabot slugs. 1900fps.
I am also considering a rem 1100 or 1187 semi auto. would i have my barrel rifled or just get another barrel.
what would one expect to pay for a rifled barrel ?

You can get a rifled barrel for your 870 for around $300. You'd want the cantilever barrel for a scope mount. A friend of mine bought that barrel and its dead-on at 100yds. http://www.basspro.com/Remington-Fa...els-with-27x32-Scope-and-Rings/product/94897/ The 11-87 is good, it's what I use and it also has an cantilever barrel.. I've killed deer past 170 yds with that.Another option is to get a single shot HR shotgun. I hear good things about those

This deer fell to that Federal sabot slug, out of a rifled barrel.

You can also try rifled slugs or choke to see how they shoot from your gun. A regular slug in a smooth barrel is like throwing a hot dog down a hallway.

Mossberg makes a rifled cantilever barrel and scope combo for the 870 that Cabelas has for $219. I have one on my 870 and it shoots very well with the right sabot slug. I did upgrade the scope.

If you have choke tubes, you can also consider getting a rifled choke tube. It will not be as good as a fully rifled barrel, and you will need to get a separate saddle style scope mount if you want a decent sight, but a less expensive option to be able to use sabots. If you are going to hunt in shotgun only areas very often though, a fully rifled barrel with cantilever scope mount is the way to go. If you are using sabots because you are hunting the condor lead free zone and needed copper slugs which are only available in the sabot rounds, there is a brand of slugs called Dupleks that are certified lead free and can be fired through non-rifled barrels. I've not used them myself as I have a rifled barrel for my shotgun, but I believe there is a thread or two on the board with info and feedback.

I get this all the time. Guys asking for slugs. They're hunting Zone A (copper only). "No, I have sabots". "What's the difference?" "Do you have a rifled barrel?" "What's that?" Happens time after time.

It would be easier if they simply walked into a gun store and asked. The interweb allows them to avoid embarressment I guess.

I often use the site to gather first hand experience and opinions on subjects before I walk into a gun store and ask. Just another resource, sort of a precurser to hitting the stores completely clueless. Like you said, may avoid a little embarrrassment and you go in with a little knowlwdge on the subject which may earn you a little respect from the salesman. As been often said "this site is a great tool" but just one tool in the bag.

Unfortunately a lot of opinions are use what I use. only one person even mentioned how often he may use it. I understand that rifled barrells will out perform a rifled slug or choke. The problem is if you only use it to access particular ta's at FHL than it makes more sense to become proficient with a rifled slug at 80 yards for the two trips per year. 99% of us here are not gun experts because we have limited resources. A gun shop or gunsmith has training on multiple makers and models for many situations. Every time the subject of slugs comes up it is the same answers from the same people that use a particular one. It is a limited gene pool that is unable to to provide variety. if I personally wanted to focus on slug hunting I would look for deer hunting blogs in some of the states that only allow shotguns for hunting. The low numbers of people that exclusively hunt with shotguns and have for decades on here will seriously limit a new person. I try to give them general options so they know whats out there to research.
