As a reward for supoorting my brother-in-laws Bakersfield Football program, I will be hunting hogs on a vineyard close to Pasa Robles for the first time on July 23th and 24th. Its weapon of choice, so I'm bringing both bow & rifle.
How hot is it down there? Do I need to bring my hat with the built-in fan, or a frozen jock to stay cool.

What items do I need in the pack while hunting. I'm a in-bred mountian guy. Is I going to melt into a cube of butter, or what?

Yort, Congratulations on your upcoming hunt. As for the weather this weekend Paso is expecting of a high near 105 degrees if that is any indication. Expect very hot conditions and be happy if the weather is a little cooler. Most likely you'll be hunting early mornings and the last hour or two so the temps will not actually be that bad. Enjoy your hunt. Some of those wine fed hogs are good eating!

Where can I get one of those frozen jocks? I'll be hunting for blacktails in Templeton near Paso Robles on the A-zone opener and that sounds like a great idea.

My wife said they only come in small. But, I hope the cool mesh camo I use while in A-17 helps.

Be sure to have a cooler on stand by, pork spoils real fast especially in the heat

As you have read from the other JHOers it will be a hot time in Paso in July. The pigs will be about 95% docturnal, only being out for about the first couple hours of light in the morning and the last hour of light in the evening. You can always try to bust them out of their beds but when it's 90-100 degrees that's tough work. I would take a lot of gatorade and energy bars. And if you do get some pigs, get them gutted and cooled down in a hurry.

Good luck.

To acclimatize yourself, spend a while in Politics forum where all pots are boiling.

Finally got the chance to hunt this weekend. We were hunting 9 miles from Hwy. 101 on the Nacimiento Lake Drive. The was perfect weather, overcast all morning and a good breeze to keep the temps. under 90 all day. Anyways, we had a great time. As advised, we saw several good hogs in the early morning, but hunting with bows, I was the only person to stick a pig. I made a good shot across the river @ 30 yds, it was a clean pass through and the hog took-off @ full speed into the thick willows. But after crossing the river, I found a lot of grissle & stuff on the broadhead, which indicated that I was too far back with a gut shot. The blood trail was good, so I tracked the amimal out of the willows and into a clearing which led to the hillside, which my brother said he saw the hog traveling in that direction. We decided to let the hog find some shade to lay down and hopefully die. Meanwhile everyone switched to rifles @ mid-morning and started cruising the vineyard. Well, after waiting a couple of hours and searching a couple more, my hog was no where to be found. I thought it would be fairly easy to spot a hog in the open hills, but there was nothing.

At 11:00 we spotted 3 hogs watering and tried a stalk, but we could not find them in the thick brush once we were within shooting range. Anyways, after going for some lunch and rest, we tried again to find my hog with no success. After that, we spent the rest of the afternoon/evening glassing from a high spot which we did see 2 more hogs, but with fading light and a 500 yd shot, my son & I passed.

Once again, it was a good time, and I'd do again in a heart beat.

Hog hunting is a blast and I'm happy to hear you guys had fun.

Hogs are tough and with anything less than a perfect bow shot you can end up with a lost critter, sucks but its the way hog hunting is.

I think its happened to most hog hunters at one point or another.

Thats why when in thick or in an area I'm not VERY familiar with I carry the .06

Good job on a fun family hunt

Yeah, I miss sometimes but the clip holds thirty rounds and I carry at least two and a side arm. At $150 for 1000 rounds you can't shoot at them enuff.
