Hello all,

This has been a terrific year for me. I first got my AO archery tag in California tagged on a nice forky. The next week I got a nice 130 pig. Then this last week topped the month off for me. Me and my brother left Bakersfield to meet my dad on the Oregon coast for some roosevelt hunting. Last year we tried really hard and had a few chances but the wind or some other reason we never were able to make it happen. We met up with my dad spent time with my little sister and the next day after my dad got off work we left for elk camp. We arrived made sure our bows were shooting good set up camp and away we went. On the first evening hunt on the way in we jumped some elk on the road. We were hunting a bull only unit and the cows crossed the road and we thought there was a small bull with them so I gave pursuit but low and behold the big bull never crossed the road. My dad just had shoulder surgery so he was not able to pull a bow back and my brother was in the back seat of the truck and the bull was standing 50 yards. By the time we got back there was nothing we were able to do. After that we seen a cow and a calf. Then it all went cold. No bugles and no elk for 2 days. We seen tons of sign and found a flat the we really liked. It was on the top of a steep mountain that had a clear cut at the bottom. It had old skid roads throughout the flat with selective cut timber. My dad looked at me and said we are going to kill and elk. The next morning my brother had to leave for 2 days for work. It was me and my dad and our friend. We split up on 2 flats that were close by each other the elk had to be on one of the flats. As we were walking the road forks at the fork my dad noticed 7 elk beds and some really fresh poop. He stated "This was not here yesterday I would have noticed." As soon as he said that I heard a faint bugle then we looked down the old road to the right and spotted 3 elk. As soon as we spotted them a calf spotted us. We stared each other down until the calf went back to feeding. We talked it over and decided I was going to sit right next to the road and wait behind a bush and my dad was going to call. As my dad moved back I set up on the edge of the road. The calling began. Dad sounded terrific. The bull started tearing bushed up, bugled again and was going nuts. I heard him hit the old gravel road and the next thing I know I see his face, that means he can see me. I look up just to be sure he is a legal 3pt or better, and I see trees in his horns. I had an arrow knocked but was not at full draw. I sit as still as I can. Eyes like dinner plates and I know he can hear my heart thumping from my chest he chose to walk up my side of the road. At about 4 yards still on the other side of a small bush he looks at me. I look at him its a staring contest. No shot yet and I am still not at full draw he has figured out something is not. He turns the opposite way of me to run I cow call twice the love stricken bull turns to find his cow at 14 yards. I release and I got fletching deep. Automatically I see the blood start to come out. I look back at my dad who just watched the whole entire thing from about 60 yards away and he had the biggest touchdown with his hands and the biggest smile in the world. I almost fell over with excitment. I ran over and gave him the biggest hug. We heard the bull go down, but decided to get our buddy and walk to the truck before looking just to be sure. Walking out I my adrenaline was pumping so much I could not talk on the walkie talkie the good thing is that the roads were open and the bull died approximately 50 yards from the road. It was one of the easiest packing jobs we have ever had. Took the bull to the taxidermy and the elk steaks have been amazing. I am really lucky to have a father that taught me about the great outdoors, and he has been with me for the last 3 elk that I have killed. This bull was a combined effort and striking out the year before this was an great way to have every thing come together. Sorry my story isn't very good as I am not great at writing stories, and cannot put into words what a rush this hunt was.

Nice job - on a side note... What kind of meat grinder do you have (Make and model) and how do you like it?

Congrats on the nice bull, and getting the family together to break all the meat down.

Congratulatioms. For me, the best times I've spent with my dad have been hunting. The dark antlers on that elk look really cool too.

Thanks everyone. Yes my best hunting partner is my dad. We have called in many bulls for each other. It's his turn next year!!
