congratulations on winning the lottery!! man how much does a trip like that cost?the taxidermy alone will break the bank. do you have any openings where you work? .........all joking aside nice pics cant wait to here the stories......you are the ultimate GREAT WHITE HUNTER!!!!
Ultimate great White Hunter? Thanks buddy but this was an entry-level Plains Game Hunt. Scroll down and look and some of the Lion & Buffalo hunts. Dangerous game is “Hard Core”. All I needed to do was stalk hard and shoot straight.
I ended up getting everything mounted out there at about ½ the cost. I will pick up my crate at LAX no later then a year from now and fill the walls.
I will go back someday but not to RSA. When I do go back it will possibly be Zambia. I was going to spend some time there but it did not work out.
I wish you well on that "half the price" quote from RSA. One thing missing in the formula that they RSA folks never tell you is that the freight is not by weight but rather by volume. I have been doing this for a living for a long time now and have never seen a single case of money saved by doing it in RSA. You also end up with the 1930-40's quality with bug eyes and hidious stitching, aweful paint, drummed ears, and hides that split near the eyes and lips within a couple years. I know lots of great taxidermists in RSA all of them 100% served an apprenticeship in America before they got to the level of American Taxidermy over there. All are much more expensive then the average and have a very long delivery time. These are the elite, or what in America would be slightly above average for taxidermy work!
As far as shipping goes, I have seen some costs range from really expensive to insanely expensive! Brokers charge based on the value of the container. Their percent of the bill will now be based on finished goods and the insurance papers on the freight. Compared to dry salted skins and horns which have no measurable value. Albert Chichelero sent back 8 animals shoulder mounts and his broker fee and shipping was $3010.00 bucks. Worse yet the work sucked but was already paid in full when he recieved the crate. I have been bringing him back capes so he can have a local taxidermist re-do the mounts a few a year until they are all finished. His experience was not at all unique. What you see on the walls there and what you get in the crate are almost never the same!
I have a lot of buisiness interests there and a lodge. I could make an additional percent of money by sending my hunters to any one of a dozen taxidermists there. I would never put my name on any part of this business in RSA. Just as an Example, I had a Genet cat mounted lifesize in RSA by a Taxidermist with 30 years experience there. He owns one of the largest studios in the country. Now I have been doing taxidermy for about 25 years and owned my own business and shop for a long time. I no longer do taxidermy for a buisness, only my own things. This Taxidermest wanted to do the taxidermy for my hunters, not just the pack and dip. I said it was entirely up to the hunters not me. HE suggested I have him do a mount for me som that my American Hunters could see the quality of his work back in the states and make their own decision. I said fine, I have this Genet Cat mount it Life size for me.
So he does this with the knowledge that it will be on display for the hunters to look at and see how great his quality is. ............Well when somebody see's my trophy room they can pick out that Genet every time as "not quite right" and I always say to them that was "stuffed" in RSA not "mounted" by me. I never have to suggest where they have the work done again!
I envisioned that you were going to go get one or two quality animals. This exceeded all expectations. I'll bet the womens groups are so happy to have some quality meals coming their way.
You were dead on w/ the shipping. They still won't gice me any kind of a quote as far as shipping goes. They only tell me that a broker would take care of it. I told them to dip it and ship it.
My last 2 shipments that came out of Tanzania............ hunt was August 04............
landed in customs in Houston March 05............. shipping, Broker taxes etc.... $1100 & the other $1300............. six animals each.
Hides at the Tannery as we speak & should be complete this month September.
I've been waiting since Raahauges to hear about your safari. Last week, Benelli had a special on hunting in Namimbia (?) and it sure looked a lot like what you pulled off. I am one jealous hunter. Congrats on the awesome hunt and photos!!
That is a good plan, the dip pack is still not cheap but pennys compared to a crate full of mounts. Plus the turn around will be far shorter.
The big advantage once the trophies are here at home is that you can have the local taxidermist mount them inthe order you choose and do one every few months or at what ever schedule meets with your needs and cash.
In RSA all are done before they ship and you don't get them any sonner then the last one. Being done here you can have at least one or two fairly quick once the hides and hons show up at the taxidermy.
I quite often have my hunter consign the crate to the tannery in the USA directly so they can get that started immediatley. Tanning can be 1-3 months in the USA and then your work gets into the "que" at the Taxidermy. One thing I have noticed is that if you strike a deal with the chosen taxidermist in the USA for the whole Safari you can usually work a deal to have him jump on the first mount of the batch which you can choose the day he gets the tanned capes back from the tannery.
One final suggestion is that you should not deal with a Taxidermy business in the USA that claims to do thier own tanning. Stick with a commercial taxidermy that uses a real tannery. Those hides from Africa come as hard as a rock and require professional attention. They are not like fresh salted deer capes. I cannot even count the amount of replacement capes I have had to get for the "do it yourself" tanners out there.
Trust one of the big dogs to get this done right for you. New Method in San Francisco is one of the biggest African Game tanneries in the world. You can consign the trophys to them and they have a local broker(heckney) that will clear the crate (including warthogs or bushpigs) and then get it to the tannery in the same town. It's a simple process with decnet turnaround by people who do this full time with African businesses. The Biggest dip pack business in RSA is on a first name basis with the management at New Method in SFO. Thats how much work they do together.
If you have any questions on how to make this smooth and effortless just let me know. It's my business and I have been at it a long time now. We have taken just shy of 300 hunters through our camp now!
I've heard it's a lot cheaper to have it tanned there and mounted here, but I've also heard that hides come here damaged with extra holes, etc., whether they are just dipped or tanned there. How reliable or safe is the dipping and/or tanning? If it's a lot cheaper to have it tanned there and it costs the same to ship it tanned or just dipped, it seems like it is better to tan it there. Anyone with experience please speak up.
If you decide tom gom we can discuss your options. A lot depends on the species your gonna bring home and the work you want done. Flat skins tan there, Zerbra rugs have them done there. Shoulder mounts have then dip packed and tanned and mounted here. Tanning is a personal thing your Taxiudermist will want to handle. As I said we can sort out the details of that later if you want to come hunt with us we will help you and get you through the process based on what you want done with the best results for your specific needs.
