S.F Sports & Boat Show to return to Cow Palace

The San Francisco Sports & Boat Show was sold Friday to the American Sportfishing Association, which promised to reinvent it as a five-day show at the Cow Palace featuring fishing, boating and travel.
The deal was finalized when the dates Jan. 21-25 were guaranteed at the Cow Palace. That positions the show a week ahead of the International Sportsmen's Exposition in San Mateo, and a week behind a similar show in Sacramento, and yet does not conflict with the Super Bowl.
After a 60-year run, the Sports & Boat Show was forced to cancel this past winter when the Northern California Marine Association opened a competing show in Pleasanton with overlapping dates. A try at a five-day boat show in April was scrapped when several major exhibitors said they would not attend.
A key to the deal is that Bart Hall, president of Fred Hall Associations, will operate the new Sports & Boat Show. Hall produces shows in Long Beach, Ventura and San Diego in which the ASA has majority ownership. The ASA's success in Southern California in the past five years inspired the move north to San Francisco, said Dick Pool, western regional representative for ASA.
The American Sportfishing Association is a trade group that includes most of the nation's tackle manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, sales reps and state agents. With that new support, Pool predicted the result would be a dramatic new fishing show with a great array of tackle, boats and resort destinations.
In addition, the new show also will feature a new emphasis on boats used for specific purposes for the bay, ocean, lakes and rivers, and dozens of specialty seminars on more than 10 species of fish popular in the Bay Area and Northern California.
Pool also said that half of the show proceeds would go to conservation programs run by ASA to improve fishing.
