Got invited to hunt hogs&Javelinas in S. Texas next year. Trying to figure out if its worth the trip or not. What do Javelinas taste like? Are they even edible?

Edible but not the best eating. And I like unusual taste.

Never heard that they're as good as hog, but then again, you'll never know until you try it. Almost (I say almost) any game is good with the right recipe. I've made chili 'coon carne that was better than chili made with beef from raccoons I trapped at my old duck club. Also, I'm pretty sure that South Texas has hogs as well as javelinas, but definitely more jav's. I'd go if I were you, but maybe search/ask around for a solid tried and true javelina recipe.

First off, if you get invited to hunt S. Texas, do it. I'm assuming it's private land, most of Texas is, so the hunting should be great. Secondly, javelina are not rodents, and they're not in the rodent family - they're collared peccarys, which make them related more closely to the hippo than a rodent. Thirdly, they're edible, but they have a musk gland that you have to be very careful about - any contact with that, and forget about it. You might want to find out as much about the land you'll be hunting, as you can - they may have a ton of hogs, and they might be the best eating big game out there. Good luck.

What Wild1 said. See if there are exotics on the land...$45 for a 5 day non-resident license that covers all the exotics, blackbuck, axis, etc. Texas is a hoot to hunt.

This is on private land. Don't know the area at all. The person inviting me is a close friend of the ranch owner. He said there are pigs there but most are nocturnal. He asked if I have night vision equipment. lol

ok, I will go for sure then. Be a good experience. I've checked and indeed a 5 day license is $48 which includes 2 javes and unlimited hogs. Just have to find some sweet deals on Southwest. One thing he did say is there's a bunch of rattlers. I hate those things...

I got my first pair of snake boots the following week. I just got back into hunting a couple of years ago and needed new boots so I got the Rocky's listed above. I'm really happy with them.

I hunted South Texas on a ranch in October. We hunted with archery equipment day and night. I was kinda weird hunting at night, with spot lights, with a bow. Seems like anything goes in Texas which is alright with me!! We didn't see any rattlers but I know they were there it's prime country for them. If you hunt at night take a good spotlight with a red cover on it. The white light didn't seem to bother the pigs but it messed with our vision, the red really helped out. Here's a couple pics of 2 of my 3 I was able to harvest. Let us know how it goes.

He wasn't joking. Since hogs and exotics are not considered "game animals", game laws don't apply. You can hunt them at night. The idea of using red spotlights is a good one and even a cheap NV setup would be useful.

I hunted uvalde in 2006. We shot a hog within 2 hours of taking to the field, right at dark.
