Figuring out what your common, everyday freshwater bass is thinking hardly takes much imagination.

A lure in progress.​

Lance Leavitt tests one of his fishing lures in the family pool. The key to a good lure, he said, is to mimic the motion of a wounded fish.​

Lance Leavitt takes over the table with his handcrafted fishing lures while his wife, Liane, works in the kitchen. "He always cleans it up again," she said.​

Several examples of the finished product. Leavitt often attaches a series of beads on one side and a strip of shiny material on the other side to maximize the chance that a hungry bass will take the bait.​
