I may be interested. Do you know of anyone who's hunted the ranch before? What the success rate is? Does he charge if you don't get a pig? I was planning for Mustang Guide Service in King City, but this is alot closer plus I know that area well and there are pigs up there. Probably don't want TOO many people on a hog hunt. Have you talked to him already?

yotegetter,
You mentioned Mustang guide Service, in King City. I have hunted with them (Frank) 5 or 6 times and have allways been happy with them. Sometimes with dogs and sometimes without, however; we have allways gotten hogs. We go every spring. It started out with just 3 of us, now it's 6 or 7 every year. He has plenty or land (private) to hunt and very good guides if you have more than a few hunters. No, I'm not in the advertising business; just passing along some info. If I can answer any questions about them, please ask, I'll be honest with my answers.

BLASTMASTER,

what kind of ranger threw you out? BLM?

No pigs near Silverwood, they were shot out before that info hit the rumor mill.

Fat chance on Riverside Co. letting us back into Santa Ana River Drainage. If you get caught sneaking on land there the wardens are not real friendly. Check out Hidden Valley Park by Corona/Riverside City border to see what we are missing. Just don't take your bow.

bhackney,

hit the helpful link thread pinned at the top of this forum. On my webpage there is pics of hog tracks, wallows, scat etc.

I just thought I'd let out a little hog area secret for anyone who wants to give it a shot. Last April I went to our annual DFG Hunter Instructor conference (this year they held it up in Santa Maria.....hog country). In talking to some of the local instructors up there, a couple of them I found were avid hog hunters. One of them told me that there is a little known fact that the area around Lompoc (no clue as to exactly where) is loaded with pigs on BLM land. Not a lot of hunters hunt the area (so he says) and the pigs are plentiful.

This is not my honey hole, but if mine went dry, I'd head toward Lompoc and check this out.

I didn't join JHP until August and frankly didn't think of posting this until I just read this thread. So, I just thought I'd pass it on to any of you bros here who might want to check it out. Wish I would've asked for more specific directions on the area, all I recall is it was BLM land around Lompoc. Good luck to any of you who want to give it a shot and please report back if you do go on what you saw. Later.........

This BLM would probably be around Jalama Beach.I went on guided hunt at Central Coast Outfitters right near there. So good luck to anybody that gets the map and finds it.

"what kind of ranger threw you out? BLM? "
That was this past May and I'm not sure, but it said "Ranger" on his truck and I seem to think I saw Riverside County somewhere on his uniform. If I remember right, he said that we were on a part of Riverside County property that was marked "No Trespassing" (I never saw the sign). Anyway, it never pays to argue in the field so Me and my boy left and I haven't been back since.

As far as "near Silverwood" I'll give you a hint...Mohave River comes out of silverwood. I've chased 'em from Barstow to the spillway. Only problem is you gotta catch 'em where you can shoot 'em...not so easy to do.

Been out to Norco/Corona (unarmed) and scared some bowhunters in that wildlife sanctuary once.

Blastmaster probably got run out by a "Riverside County Park Ranger" . Most of the land where the pigs hangout is part of the "Norton Younglove Preserve" at the split west of the 60fwy/10fwy.
We own the land, but of course you can't hunt it, and if you want to ride your dirt bike there you'll have to pay the concessionaire.
From what I've been told there is a good size population of pigs in the area, that are descendants of Bighorn Ranch escapees. Also about 10 years ago Bighorn lost their lease for about a year, so the animals there went feral. When the lease owner couldn't sell the land, Bighorn got the lease back.
The pigs hang out on the Preserve because there are some springs there. The people who do sneak into the preserve go on dirt bikes and sit on the springs in the evenings. From what they say the pigs come to water every evening.
I'm sure there are a few pigs that wonder off the preserve or private lands in the area. So if you can find food and water, who knows.

Gee thanks Guys for giving out my spot..

Anyway, yup but you gotta find the best spots on your own.
Hint, hint, the Air Force Base north of Jamaha Beach is ooozing with them so any BLM land around it is prime hog country.
Also dont be afraid to ask the local ranchers. I hunted rabbitts on some of those ranches and a few hogs years ago.

I have a few friends who hunt Vandenburg, It is loaded with both pig and deer.. But only active & retired military can hunt there.. There should be pigs on some of the land around the base...

Bishop is right about the escapees...It got so bad that DFG put out hog traps to catch pigs in the area......Would be fun to get out there with our bows...Wishful thinking....

The base people here ask the Air Force to open up the base to all hunters last year. However the Air Force Command has not given them to ok as of yet..

I got an answer on that email, and they referred me to the Rod and Gun Club. Since they probably don't set base access policy, it sounds like the start of a run-around.

Thanks man! You have peeked my interest however, on Camp Roberts from the other thread. I'm working fast and furious to see if I can make it for the 30th or 31st. My wife just called me all freaked-out about a mouse, so maybe if I hunt that sucker down, I'll get a last minute go-ahead for Camp Roberts.

I'm not stationed at VAFB, but I have hunted it and this is what I can tell you. To hunt the base you must purchase a stamp from the PX(exchange in navy terms). I just read what it says on the rod and gun club page and I'm not sure that is fully correct. When I went into the PX to purchase this stamp, they required my military ID card. I'd call and make sure before going all the way up there. And as for the seasons, its the same as the CA regulations. The only time it is different is when they have areas closed off for one reason or another.
