Last week, I spotted a group of hogs when I was scouting for turkey on public land. It's been bugging me all week. So, I decided to take the day off and head up the hill. Up at 4am and grabbed the bow, hit 7/11 for a 24 oz. coffee. Figured I could tell people I was turkey hunting, if the hogs weren't there. I parked and started walking to where I could get up high and glass. After two hours of that, I was feeling guilty for not being at work. On the way back to the truck, I heard some grunting. Whoa! It's weird hearing that sound in San Diego.

I checked the wind and ran to get downwind of the grunts. Arrow nocked, release on, and knees kinda feeling weak, I started a little stalk. I didn't know which direction they were heading so I wasn't just going to stand there. Then, I heard brush breaking. I moved up to where I could see an opening. I could hear them coming. Grunting and snorking around. I set up. Through the brush I could make out two black hogs coming in. They should pop out at ten yards! I drew. The first one was at least a 150 lber. I wanted to see the second one, it looked bigger through the brush. He stepped out and suddenly snapped his head around and stared right through me. It seemed like an hour, but it was probaly only ten seconds. He took another step and I put the pin behind his shoulder and let'er rip. Thwack! Squeeelll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My knees were knocking. It was like I'd never killed a hog before. He piled up not 25 yards away.

Whoa!!! I gave him about 15 minutes and snuck in for a peek. He was out. The other hog was gone. He's a stud. Nice teeth. Maybe 250 on the hoof. Best part was it was only a 300 yd. drag down hill to the truck. Actually, I just kicked him a few times and he rolled down to the truck. Getting him in the truck sucked though.

Had to use my phone camera. Sorry for the bad photo...

There is still some snow in San Diego, at least there was last weekend. There are pigs in San Diego but I haven't heard any credible reports that they are on public land. That's a pretty good April fools joke, wish I would have thought of it first!

dayum, he got me. I was about to award him hero status.

I did talk to a Pali Indian at Bass Pro recently. He said they have a boatload of turkeys but they shot all the hogs on the rez. FWIW.

Hook, line, and sinker! Dude, you had me. As I start to read I'm thinking to myself " Bro, don't blow your cover". Nice Aprils fool...I suppose the snow could be up in Alpine. Oh, by the way, I limited on snipes today.
