Just wondering if anyone has been hunting in the San Diego River Drainage? Been down there twice now in the past month with the maps that the Cleveland forest put out and have seen no sign at all....anyone else have any luck?

Thanks
Todd

The best estimates available is that SD county holds somewhere between 300-500 wild hogs. That's a HUGE area for that few hogs to hide in. The nasty terrain doesn't help and is in the hogs favor. Give it about 5 years and there might be a huntable population. As usual, public lands get hammered. Might want to consider a guided ranch hunt.

Might check into Bryson Hysperia resort for a semi-guide hunt. Tejon's great pretty good but your liable to have a heart attack climbing the hills. My buddy (Marine) and I did it once, never again, terrain just too steep.

What part of the drainage are you talking about? There are several different areas. I've been in the northern one quite heavily. Pm me for info

San Diego is just Luck right now. Most of the pigs are still on the indian res. a few trickled out, but went right to private land. I talked to the warden here who was very friendly and told me this info. Ive been up in the area reported to have them, with no luck. I think it will be a few years before the population in the public area is decent. The national forest gets hit hard here during turkey/deer seasons, so once in a while guy kick a hog up. It's not worth a long drive though.

I been chasing them here with my dogs and although there are some on public land, seems that most have gone back to the res or on private property. I think a few more years, like stated above and we should have a decent population. There were good number of sows with piglets last year so I think the population will kick off really well.

They either went back on to private land, or they are just really really good at hiding.....its like finding a needle in a haystack....

I just got back from Tejon and will echo ltdann. That place is steep. Me and my 2 partners are fireman and it was very steep but we are used to the hills and will be going back there for sure when they open up the management hunts again.

We hunted BHR semi-guided this past weekend. There were 5 of us. In 2 full days, I was the only one who saw two pigs, a fleeting glimpse at that. They were at least 1000 yds off, so a rapid dash to head them off was out of the question. There was plenty of "pig sign", but never saw the pigs that made it. We looked...hard.

Those itty bitty hills to big for a couple marines? Just kidding, first time i ever decided against going after an animal was at tejon. My buddy spotted a huge boar way off in an area with know road access, thought it would be best to leave him be.

I just found these in CNF on President's Day with my son and his friend:

Now, we are brand new to hog hunting. So, what would you do? We sat and waited for about an hour up on a hill looking down. I have been scouting almost every weekend and now, I feel that I am finally getting warm! Hints, tricks or advice? Thanks everyone in advance!

I know you won't give lat/lon of that area , but I'd give a days pay to know where that very fresh sign was !!! Set out a couple game cams in that area and see if you can get em on film. Find out their pattern and go SPANK one! Stay on em .

Thanks mezcan! I have been working really hard to find those signs. Now that finally I got them, I feel like Wiley Coyote when he finally got the Road Runner. lol As far as "pattern" I am guessing when they come out to eat right? I think I found a wallow too! I read a biologist said Hogs come out more frequently in warmer weather to cool off. I am just so excited to see REAL signs of hogs for once! Yay!

I am gonna take you up on your game cam advice! Thanks again bro!

That is VERY good sign. Besides the trail cams, it's time to set up on that hill and start glassing from daylight till mid morning and then again from 3 pm till dark. Make sure you keep an eye out on the edges of the thick stuff, because that's where they'll come from.

What?! Actual pig sign in the CNF? Incredibly psyched for you that you found that spot; good luck!

(between this and the news spot last week is really getting my blood flowing. I will get one of these mystery pigs this year!)
