Has anyone hunted the San Felipe Valley Wildlife Area or know anything about it? It is fairly close to me and I will probably go check it out this week once I find out some more info on it. I am trying to expand my hunting areas as a lot of my old areas have been shut down. The areas I still hunt are getting hit hard and with the limited numbers of birds this year it's making it even tougher. Just trying to get my pup into some birds!!! Any help appreciated!

Thanks,

I have hunted it several times. It is all about good rainfall. This year will be tough again. Park car and go as far away from road as possible. Go early, call often. I have done well away from the road. Also, two thirds of it is still closed to hunting after 5 years of dfg red tape. Some of the best quail areas are in that area (I poached it a few years ago). When that opens up next year watch out, it is 13,000 acres and we (hunters) bought it with our license money. The darn enviro's have hung this thing up for to long and it is total b.s., we should have had it open by now. They say the E.I.R. is done but they still have to talk about a couple of issues i.e. (collared lions) and "useage". qkiller

Thanks for the tip!!! I was reading about all the red tape B/S and couldn't believe it still hasn't been opened upp completely. I am looking forward to checking into it. It has been tough every where this year. Hopefully it will open next year.

Thanks again!

I was there this past Saturday and put quite a few miles in, even my dogs were tired!! :) I really like the place but no birds were to be found this time out :( I did ok there the last couple of years, they seem to know where the thick brush is and stay really close to it. I called and called and never got a reply. The dogs locked on scent several times and I was hopefule but yet nothing.

I was on the south end of the permittable area.

Good luck and bring lots of water as it gets hot!

Thanks castone001, bummer about not finding any birds but sounds like they were in there if you dogs were getting scent. Did you get there early? Thanks for the tip on the water, I always bring plenty of water because I drink like a fish and my dog gets plenty also.

Thanks B/S

Yes I parked at the Kiosk at the southern end at around 7:00am'ish.

Don't really matter to me as I enjoy the hunt/hike in the outdoors way more than I like the llok on my dogs face when I shoot and miss!! They sure get pissed off me!! I keep telling them that im outta of practice but it doesnt protect me from being chastised by my dog! HAHAHAHA!!

I bring a 2 liter(i think) hydration pack in my cabella's upland vest and the dogs pretty much run it dry in a couple hours. I always bring along two extra smaller water bottles as backup.

Is there a check in station or sign in sheet or anything like that? Yah, its tough missing on a year like this you don't know when the next shot will be.

Just got back from Cabo!!! Haven't hunted San Felipe yet this year but have the last couple. Dont be afraid to hunt the BLM land on the East side of the S-2 as i have found many quial on this side. I also like this area when the 2nd dove season opens!!! Sad to hear the quail are hard to find right now!

I will make sure I take a look on the East side also. I am always looking for new spots! I might even make it out there on Wednesday have a buddy visiting and he wants to go try and find some birds. Depends on what we find in some ole honey holes, so far hasn't been too good. Thanks for the info.

Good luck! I am going on my 2nd hunt of the quail season Wednesday also. But i am going with a buddy to Cleghorn for quail and Goat springs area to look for chucks. Good luck down there. Let me know how San Felipe is if you go, want to know if it is worth the drive later in the year. Thanks. 2 years ago a game warden sent me a map of the San Felipe area and showed some good areas the quail roost on the east side. I went there the last 2 years and got more than 5 quail both times on the east side!

Just an update.....Went out yesterday and got into a few wiley birds in an old hunting spot but the birds are elusive and have definitely been shot at. When they were not running they were flying way out in front, should have had two but just plain out blew it! Oh well it was fun just being able to get out. Went to San Felipe Valley at noon and hunted it for three hours and didn't see hide nor hair of any birds. Looks like great country but there isn't any water out there so I don't think the birds are going to hang around. Might be a different story in the early morning I don't know? Didn't hunt the other side of S2. All in all only saw 6 birds all day should have had two in the bag but came home with an empty bag but a smile on our faces regardless. Good luck to the rest of you guys!

Yes, hunting for both. My neighbor has been out there quite a bit and has a plan. I will let you know how it goes. Let me know whenever you go out for a day or two on your days off, my schedule is opening up some now.
