After a long hiatus from fishing San Gabriel River due to the shifty crowds that would infest the whole area, I decided to give it a another try. I headed up with a friend from work before dawn and had a great time. Water levels are good and there are plenty of pools to hit. We didn't have any luck on the east fork but got a few each on the west fork. This was just a quick trip and we only went a short distance down the west fork but still landed and released a half dozen fish, some of them really nice sized. I'm sure if we spent more time and continued further we would have found more. Overall we had a great time and hope to get back again. We were alone until about 9AM when we saw a couple other fishermen and it wasn't till around noon that we saw a couple of odd characters in the parking lot. I guess even in winter the trick to missing the riff raff (God, did I just type riff raff! I am now officially old) is to get there early.
