Some years ago I was driving back to the Bay Area and just right after I passed the Oneil Forebay Bridge, there were three pigs milling around on the hillside about 150 yards from the freeway. Two black ones and one with a white collar around the neck. Where the pigs were was part of the Lower Cottonwood Creek Wildlife Area and it was open for hunting during that November month. Rain was sprinkling on and off so I guess that's why no one was there hunting.

I hunted Cottonwood Creek once about 15 years ago. As I recall the tags were awarded via drawing, and I think we hunted there the first day of the season.

The terrain was pretty rugged. We hiked in before dawn and were waiting at a water hole somewhere in the preserve, but saw no pigs. After the sun came up we hiked all over the place just to explore. It was otherwise a fruitless trip for us. We saw just one pair of guys harvest a boar. That pig stank so much you could smell it from 20 feet away.

A couple of years later a trucker acquaintance of mine was taking 152 over to I-5 and saw a boar near the road which he swore would have weighed in at 400+ pounds. So far as I know he did have some hunting experience, though how much boar hunting experience I don't remember.

I live right near there and I have hunted up there alot. There are pigs there but they tend to stay in the park. If you go after deer season it much better because there is no pressure. Be carefull because I think the lake side is Shot gun only.

i see them probably 50 percent of the time i go fishing there. I didn't know you could hunt any where around the lake and if you can I will certainly be taking my rifle when I go fishing. If anyone really knows the rules there let me know please and I will tell you where Walter is!!!!!! No really i see them all the on the west side of the lake and some pretty big boars at that.

You only can hunt with shotgun or bow and arrow.. With the shotgun you may not used a rifled barrel... you also have to check in when you park to go huntin and check out when you leave... You can get maps with the rules in the parking area... Make sure you follow the rules b/c there are a lot of rangers out there, but they have all seemed pretty nice.... nofear25

Pigdream-- All that land you are talking about is private. I see hogs all the time there too, along with some really big bucks and elk many times too. Would be nice though, wouldn't it?

A couple years ago I was driving on east bound 152 and saw the Park Rangers loading a bull elk in the back of a truck on the side of the freeway just before the I-5 intersection. Looks like roadkill but the car that hit it was not there. Couldn't imagine what kind of damage to the car and driver.

I hunted the neighboring land owned by the El Torro Cattle Co.. I shot a pig SOO big...I kid you not!...that I had to wait for more light that morning because I thought it was a calf! He was sleeping under a tree about 220yds from where we decided to stop and rest on our hike into the ranch. It was about a half hour before first light and my buddy david and I decided to stop and rest till first light. We were about 500yds from a known watering hole. Had the wind in our favor so I opened up the legs on my bipod set my gun down and laid down in the grass. Well about 10min later my buddy dave (mr. paranoid) keeps saying "did you hear that" im like NO! finally I decide to listen to him and I concentrated on the area he was talking about and sure enough I heard and could see something in the distance. It was slightly foggy..more like hazy. It was a big arse black object under a tree about 200+ yds in front of us. My binos were useless that early and the haze was making it impossible to see. So we just waited it out. Finally dawn made its appearance and we were able to see a little better... I wanted to shoot the bugger but I just couldnt tell if it was a big calf or what. I just couldnt make out the bottom half because of the rounded angle of the hill. Then it happened..I felt a tiny breeze at the back of my neck..about 20seconds latter I heard a PIG snort and he big bastard started to trot to my left. I pulled the legs out to full on t my 300 Weatherby and found that little bastage in my scope. I about what I thought was 3 inches back from the front of his chest and squeezed one off. WHACK! I heard the Nosler hit and that big bastage rolled onto his right side and squeeled hard once and that was all. Dave and I walked up and had ground ENLARGEMENT! first time that has happened to me

. This guy was huge. Weighted him at 478lbs at Tracy quick freeze. He had 4 5/8 Ivory on one side and 3 1/4 on the other..unfortunately that side was broken..fighting or digging i guess. He was nicely scarred up. Finally the trophy hog I had been wanting. Wish I had a infield photo...I need to take a pic of him and post it up. RG

nofear, that ranch is across the road and borders Upper Cotton Wood.

The only area to hunt on the reservoir side is to your left as you drive down to the boat launch from the Dinosaur Pt. entrance. As mentioned above, shotgun or bow only. Don't forget to sign in, F&G are around and will check you and ask if you signed in.

Railguner, welcome to JHO, sent you an email.

Railguner,

Just curious how did you and your buddy were able to load that 478lb pig onto your truck or car????? then have it weighted..... I've shot 400lb+ pigs and I could barely rolled the darn thing over on it's back, I'm 5'9 160lb built. 478lbs was that field dress??? Don't tell me you both just carried it onto the back of some truck or so...... no way in the world will that ever happen.... Great story though.....
