Was filling out the SAPS 520 form and it asks for the serial number on the frame and the serial number on the barrel. Near as I can tell I only have one serial number on the whole gun. I assume some guns only have one serial number? Help..... thanks.

In RSA the law requires a barrel to have the serial number not the action, just the oposite is required in the USA.

The new laws put in place last year state that the serial number must be on ***BOTH*** the action and the barrel. I would suggest you get it stamped or engraved before you leave.

Right now they are letting this slide by but with RSA every day is new and exciting with the laws and policies they come up with. Your outfitter/ booking agent should be right on top of this for you. Best you contact them for the details they suggest. I know what I tell my hunters to do each year but I'm not in a position to suggest this with somebody elses clients.

I just checked all my guns, they all have the seral number stamped on the barrel and the action. I would think if somewhere along the way if a barrel got changed it would have a different number on it.. Make sure they both have numbers, and as said in other post, make sure they are both stamped!

I just got back and the gun #'s wasn't the problem. The problem was having an invitation letter from the outfitter, with the following information in it: Dates of the hunt, providence of the hunts, type of animals, and most important outfitter license #'s. If you can go without the guns you will be much happier. I know the next trip I will leave my guns home, our outfitter has guns for us.

Thanks a lot for the info guys. I spoke with my PH and he said the gun will be fine if it is stamped in only one place. I hope he is right :) Got the invitation letter from my PH and my Motivation Letter from Client (me) taken care of.

Badger~

Couple things here..If your having a problem getting this letter from your outfitter what kind of problems will you encounter when your out hunting w/ him.

I would NEVER use someone elses gun for this kind of hunt. I know some folks have no issues w/ that. No doubt, the 520 is a giant pain in the a$$. But on a trip of a lifetime, you want your bullet in the vitals & a gun that your not familiar w/ might be a problem.

Enjoy your hunt and good luck.

I did have an invitation letter, the problem was it didn't have his license # on it. Everyone that came through the Joeburg office had something wrong with the invite letter, I included what I and others had wrong with there letter. Take a phone # of your PH, because you will probly need it. The gun issue is a personal one, for me I have used several guns in my lifetime and not had a problem. If you don't have a gun you won't have to go through the crap we went through, again just my

I believe the new legislation talks about having the serial number in three places: the barrel, the action and I think either the bolt or cylinder, but I don't remember exactly.

I was told that the original confusion arose because the new legislation was written in both Africaans and English and there was a slight translation problem.

In one, the Africaans, it stipulated that the serial number had to be "on A and B and C" where as the English version said "A or B or C".

Unless JJ can update us on the very latest situation, I believe as long as the firearm has one serial number stamped anywhere, the cops are letting folks through and that seems to tie in with widowmaker416 recent experience... Of course knowing the new South Africa, this could all change over night!

One other thing I have been warned of is to make sure you have a land line telephone for your PH/Outfitter or who ever you are hunting with..I thin this should be on the Letter of Invitation and it would not harm to include it in the Letter of Movivation either..I have been told a mobile/cell number will not be accepted and the cops at the airport know the dialing codes so it is no use trying to bluff!

regards,

Pete

That lioness was taken by a gentleman by the name of John Wahab, from Illinois. It was taken on the South Africa side of the South Africa/Botswana border in July 2004. I was there to help with the hunt.

James,

Thanks for that..From your previous comment, I wondered if it had been taken with a bow..

Pete
