Been busy with relocation due to work, getting into a new hobby (handloading), all the other hunting seasons, out of state hunts, and work. We finally got the time to check out the old hog hole. The three generations arrived in camp just a little past midnight. Camping out in tent was mucho FRIO!!! or I should say I'm really showing signs of age. Morning came and I didn't want to get out of that cuzzy sleeping bag. Received a text from a buddy saying he will meet us in camp at 5:40am. 5:45am came and no buddy. So off to the field we went. Parked the truck and all three of us fanned out on foot up the hill. Saw some fresh tracks crossing the trail back and forth as we hiked up. An hour later met up with my buddy on top of the hill. We split up to work the hillsides and draws back down. An hour later two shots rang out from the bottom of a draw and five minutes later 4 hogs came running up the hill on the other side of the canyon. I got off two shots but both clean missed (yeah bring on the chilli-wrap dance). Buddy called on the radio and said he needs help dragging. Radioed dad and mini-me to head down to the truck. I went down and help buddy drag his hog. Another hour of dragging and we were at the truck then back to camp.

The same spot for Saturday evening hunt did not produce anything.

Sunday morning, the three generations went to another spot. Driving to the spot we saw numerous signs. The roads were littered with hog tracks and under oak trees were rototilled up. The roads were virgin of tire tracks for who knows how long. We came around the corner looking down on an open flat and there they are. They heard the truck so they mingled up tight with each other and start to slowly move away. I shut off the engine and they stopped right before going over the hill. Mini-me finally got the gun out, prone on one knee. That .308 barked and one dropped in its track. The rest scattered over the hill. We all jumped back in the truck and I knew just the canyon that they were headed down. There is a road on the bottom. We drove around to the bottom road and there they came down a trail. Dad jumped out and setup on a rock while I rested on a tree next to the rock. Waited for them to come down the trail to about 30 yards. I whistled and they all stopped. The .270 and .243 barked on three and they all scattered across the road and down to the bottom of the canyon. Some of them stopped while making their way across the bottom creek bed and we could have easily shot a couple more at 150 yards but each of us only have one tag so the rest of the herd made it to safety. Two more down making a total of three down from the herd of about 25. Easy drag to the road and we were on our way back to camp.

Well Done! Nice team to work with too.

It sounds easy when described by someone who knows what they're doing.

Awesome! Great job. I've worked my butt off to find a public land hog spot and finally have one. The only problem is it requires a day to hike into. But last time my camera had some pictures of some guys that looked fresh as a daisy with jeans and t shirts on. So something tells me there's an easier way in to my honey hole. Now I just need to find out how they got there! Congrats on the public hogs. They truly do require a lot of time and effort to find.

Down the highway, over the mountains, in a valley, under the patch of oak trees at the edge of the thick chapparal brush next to a river bank.

Relax. Do you know how much work it takes to find pigs on public land?

Nice work as always L2H.

Precisely my point! I didn't ask any specifics just where abouts. PL's are typically thousands of acers. Wasn't trying to encroach.

You ask where and I gave you where. You didn't ask any specifics so I gave it to you non-specifics. Why get all hype-up?

You're right L2H, so let me rephrase, what region are you in? Northern, Central , or Southern California? I am in the Napa area and I haven't seen a lot so I'm sorry I've just been frustrated. I've been hearing that the Central area has always been good. So, I quess that is specific as I was trying to get.
