The old hog hole is still hot but it won't last long before the hogs move off. Arrived at the spot as dawn starts over the horizon. Sat under an oak tree overlooking a meadow waiting for more daylight and hoping the hogs would show under one of the oak trees that were rooted out underneath. 7:30am rolls around and I was watching all the heavily used hog trails coming/going across the river bottom. All of sudden pop tapped me on the shoulder and pointed on the hillside. Sure enough 7 hogs working on acorns under the oaks. We start to make our way up to them but they decided work their way down to us. We changed plan and moved 100 yards down to a gulley where the hogs seemed to be heading towards. I had the bipod down and on my belly in a sniper position. Pop was on his butt and resting on his knees. Minutes later the hogs cleared the oak trees and out in plain view at about 40 yards. Told pop I'm taking the big boar so he settled on one of the bigger sows. On three and both hogs flopping 5 feets from each other. After gutting we couldn't lift the boar into the truck. Put the truck's rear tire directly under a tree branch. Rolled the boar next to the rear tire. A rope went over the tree branch, tied one end to the boar, the other end to the front bumper. Moved truck forward and boar lifted up and swung into tailgate.
After the hogs were loaded into the truck, it was early in the morning and those bandtails were flying back and forth across the river bed. We busted out the shotguns and in no time limited out. One of the bird I shot dove into a patch of green oak trees half way uphill from the river bed. I walked up looking for my bird and this tree squirrel came out of nowhere barking at me. I gave it a #4 20ga. Everything all packed in the truck.
