I wanted to go on Saturday but have been working on getting the boat ready for some spring fishing and summer fun stuffs. Spent the whole saturday finishing up the boat except for a fender crack on the trailer, thanks to Buck Hunter Vic for offering to help weld the thing back. Sunday 3am and the alarm beeped. We had stayed late the night before watching movies so the mini-me does not want to wake up. I was alone on this trip. On the freeway by 4am. 7am and I was on top of a high point glassing. There were deer after deer after deer after deer everywhere but no sign of a hog. 11am and I decide to do some driving around looking for signs. I found a small water puddle that had some fresh tracks and rooting which looked like they were made sometime in the middle of the night or early morning. It was late in the afternoon and I thought the hogs would be singing "good night sleep tight."
I went driving some more to see if I can find anymore fresh signs. I checked the usual canyon and it had some mix of old and fresh rootings. I decide head up to a higher point where I have the view of the whole canyon and took a nap. While napping in the truck with the windows down, the clouds rolled in and the wind picked up. As I dose off into my nap, these cold air kept blowing on and off into my face waking me up. Everytime I wake up, I would sit up to scan the canyon and hillsides for animals. Again deer after deer after deer. One time I sit up to scan the hills and the next hill over had two coyotes milling around. I slowly exited the truck with the smoke pole and eased up to the tree infront of the truck. The coyote was facing uphill on the opposite side of the canyon about 150 yards. I put the crosshair right on the coyote's head and squeezed away. When the smoke cleared, I saw a tan spot laying there.
I walked down and up to find a full mature female dog with .50 cal TSX bullet to the neck. I took a couple pics and left her there for the scavenger to appreciate. Back at the truck and a couple more dosing on and off later, I awoke to see 4:30pm on the clock. I glassed and scanned the canyons and ridges for hogs but only deer after deer after deer again. As I drove on my way to the small water hole I found earlier, I ran into another truck. The two guys in the truck told me they got one hog at that water hole earlier at 1pm. Damn! I should have stake out that water hole instead of the canyon. The two guys told me there were 3 hogs in the group that hey shot at. And there was another sow with some footballs that they saw on the next canyon but the hogs were on the run. I decided to stake out the water hole for the rest of the evening anyway. Hoping that the hogs may come back for water.
As I slowly drove approaching the waterhole about 300 yards way I saw 5 hogs coming down the hill heading towards the water hole. I bailed out of the truck with the smoke pole and the stalk was on. I ran down to the water hole and setup as I kept my eyes on the hogs moving right down towards me. 15 minutes later the hogs came down half way down the hill and starting side hill over towards the canyon with thick trees. I slowly stalked up towards them using a big oak tree to conceal myself. I got to the tree and the hogs started feeding towards me again. They got within 30 yards and at the point I thought about the opportunity to make a one shot two kill as I have two tags and to get a second shot with a smoke pole will never happen.
So I waited 10 minutes for two hogs to stood together presenting the shot opportunity. The milli-second before the gun went off, the foreground hog made a swift turn towards me dodging the bullet. The bullet strike the background hog on the spine behind the shoulder dropping it instantly. I had all 4 hogs ran right by me at 5 feet as I duct behind the big oak tree to reload. By the time I reload, all the hogs were running next to my truck parked in the middle of the road 300 yards away. Light was fading away and I have 300 yards of dragging 130 lbs sow over a couple of gulleys to the road. It was pitch dark when I got her loaded in the back of the truck.
