We were driving into our hunting area. I told mini-me it may not be the lucky weekend for us. Suddenly we saw XDHunter's truck approaching fast from the opposite direction. He said, "someone shot at a group of 15 pigs and they all scattered." Since that part of the area was all open, getting up to high ground to view the whole open valley was the first thing that came to mind. We split up and as I drove up to a high point, I heard three shots from XDHunter's direction. I reached the high peak and the brown pig was running for its life in the long open valley. I bailed out and sprint downhill to cut it off. Mini-me lagging behind. I got to within 150 yards and the pig slowed down to a walking pace. I sat down using my knees to rest the gun and emptied 4 rounds. Mini-me standing next to me fired one shot also. As I was changing magazine, the pig bellied up. Good, we got it. Mini-me walked over to the hog and I head back to get the truck. Half hour later we had it loaded in the truck and off we go again to find the rest of the pigs that had scattered.
We ran into a father and daughter trying to hang a big sow up an oak tree. I asked where all the hogs went. They said they only saw one. So off we go again. I thought about the the escape route the pig would normally use to get out of the area. As we drove towards the spot, a game warden came and stopped us. After a short check in the back of our truck, we were on our way again hoping to find a pig for mini-me to shoot. We head up the hill and there they are to my right about 70 yards. Mini-me bail out of the truck and by the time he got the AR15 ready the pigs had picked up pace on the run. He fired one shot and missed. The pigs disappeared into a small gulley. I bailed out of the truck and told mini-me to unload and run after me. We ran back down the road and up a small rise overlooking a big open flat. Here they come running right at us. I whispered to mini-me to use the red-dot sight on the AR15 because it will be less than 20 yards shot. At about 30 yards the pigs saw us and made a 90 turn. Mini-me had a broadside running shot so BANG! And one pig spun around then start lagging behind. The rest of the pigs high-tail out of there. Told mini-me to shoot again. He sent three more rounds and one of them strike the rump dropping the pig on its track. After gutting it and taking pics, we loaded it in the truck, then off to get it skinned.
When we left to go home on Sat afternoon, I drew a map on the back of a noodle box for XDHunter and his wife to check out a spot for the evening hunt. I barely made it home and got a pic message on the cell. It was a pic of XDHunter’s wife holding two rifles and two dead hogs laying on the ground. I will let him tell his story.
