SCI in Reno. Who's going and who's got a booth?

I'll be there for the first few days. Please post your booth number and I'll stop by and say hello.

I just checked in at the Press booth here at SCI. Lots of folks here already.

The live auctions start tomorrow from noon to 4pm and continue Friday and Saturday. Quite a few people are here to book hunts since there are some good deals in the auctions. The old hands say to know who you want to book with and then bid in their auctions so you are not bidding on an unknown outfit.

Off to the floor to take some pics and look at some hunts and gear.

If anyone has any requests to check something out please post up here and I'll try and find it.

I'm a bit late with this and I still can't get my camera pics off my digital camera.

Thursday was another busy day with the auctions going like crazy.

The video and DVD sales at two of the booths had lines 3 deep all the way around. Westlake Entertainment Group was on booth and the other was Outdoor Visions. Them African videos go for $25 to $29 compared to the regular under $20 videos from N. America.

The mounts are just awesome. There is one in the main floor with a rhino way up on a ledge, 4 sheep on one side, one the new record Marco Polo, and a huge elephant facing out. A pic is the only way to show that.

I stopped by Leupold's booth and they have the new rangefinder there that is a bit bigger than the Leica 800. Same red display text inside. Their new Boone & crockett scopes have a bullet drop compensation lines under the crosshair for range. Kind of like the Shephard scopes do it but not as busy with all the lines. They had their new monocular scopes out too and they were very crisp along with their new full size tripod.

Next was a stop to see Lennis and his pretty wife Danelle at Crooked Horn Outfitters. CHO has a new fleece like binoc cover you wear to protect the binos and still give you easy access. THey also have a little silk glass cleaner rag that clips on your bino strap setup to keep it handy. It's like a little stuff sack with the silk cleaner rag in it. Small and out of the way until you need it.

Off for a fresh squeezed lemonade next, ahhhhhhhhhh.

Met a Dr and his wife who flew up from Vegas for the show while sipping my lemonade. They both wondered how our Terminator Gov Ahnold was doing. They moaned about their governor and the mess they have with housing and the flight of people coming from California. They mentioned finally booking a trip to Africa after trying for two years but having other plans come up instead. Many say they do better booking the hunts on the floor with the outfitters than in the auctions.

They are hundreds of outfitters here from all over the globe. You hear all kinds of accents as you walk down the aisles. There are even flyfishing and deep sea fishing outfitters if you're looking for that type of trip.

Back to the floor and to look at some more of the art and custom knifes. Lloyd Pendleton was there with his lovely wife and he had some awesome knives out that included some with a cave bear tooth for a handle. His knives make great investments from what people tell me. I was also amazed by how many women walked up to the booth and handled the knives like old timers. One lil woman Loyd said, walked up and he handed here a small knife and she said, "Nah, let me see that big one over there". Lorenna Bobbitt influence maybe? I don't know.

There is also a knife and custom rifle engraving show going on at the same time over at the Hilton and so far no one I talked to has been over there. I may miss it again this year if I don't make it a scheduled stop before coming to the SCI show.

Dakota Arms had some new rifles out, their new Sharps rifle look real fine and were available in several calibers.

Jim at Outfitter Satellite brought me up to speed on the current Iridium and Global star coverage and rates. Best deal for N. Amererica is the Globalstar at half the price of the Iridium for the phone. Globalstar is supposed to close that last remaining hole in their coverage of western Alaska in a month or two. If you travel more abroad, the Iridium is the best deal. Both are about $1.00 per minute for airtime. If you need to upload data, Jim had a Immarsat data port modem about the size of a thick book. 128k up is what he quoted me on speed. It's what CNN and the other news services are using he said. One week notice is about all they need to get you a rental or new phone and they can overnight one if an emergency.

Many vendors said they are seeing more cash out for gear and hunts this year, many think it is the economy bouncing back a little.

Lee Greenwood was the preformer for the SCI chapter dinner at the Hilton Thursday at 6pm. Wednesday the entertainer was the comedian who does Bush on the Leno show.

I opted to check out a German restaurant with a buddy called the Bavarian something or other on 6th st. Good wine, bad choice for supper though since Hans? the owner goofed and only had 1 waitress working. After getting sloshed a bit on some Auslese we finally got our jagerschnitzels delivered an hour later when we started threatening to goosestep on the dance floor and sing roll out the barrels.

pointblank, I didn't see your post until now and I won't be back to look for Huntn Biz. Next year for sure.

Hopefully I can find a way to get this pics off my camera tomorrow and post them here.

Geez, I should have checked here before I left town for SCI.

I was there for Weds. & Thurs., and if I had known you would be there, we could have met at the lemonade stand. I also partook of one.
