The missus and I are out to scout a few places I wanted a closer look at over at Carrizo and Los Padres. If we don't come back, either send out the calvary, or sell all my stuff on the Tradin' Post and give the proceeds to the NRA.

It took a while to shoo all the JHP'rs away from getting ready to sell my junk. There were price tags on everything.

I'm less skeptical about Carrizo now. Like many have said, however, I don’t think pigs will be there until it’s a lot cooler and there has been some rain. Only thing is, it looks to be a lot of work to hike back in where they might be. And then, if you’re lucky and get one, you get to hike back out carrying or pulling the thing. Another reason to wait for cooler days.

Hey Kick:
We were out there this weekend from friday afternoon to this afternoon. Sorry we missed you. It was the opener for the La Panza Elk hunt, so there were a few hunters in the KCL camp. They were upset because all the elk were on private property and the owners wanted $12,000.00 for a bull and $4000.00 for a cow.

There were a couple of DFG biologists there, so we got some good info from them on pig hunting. They also said that the DFG bought a ajoining 14,000 acre ranch that they're going to open to pig, upland, and elk hunting next year. They are going to have a check station and limit the number of hunters in each day, so it doesn't get shot out. They said there are a lot of pigs on the ranch. In fact they said between Jan and May the Carrizo Plain is the best public pig hunting area in the county.

Sorry we missed you. I thought about driving through KCL to see if any JHP'ers were there, but decided it was unlikely. I did see a few people in camp, so it was probably you.

We got there Saturday morning and hiked around the back side of the Calientes. We then zipped up to La Panza campground to check out a few places around there. Still didn't get to see everything I wanted to, but we did find a couple possible spots. Need to get further back in though, I think. I don't know why, but I'm determined to get a public-land pig. Maybe throw in a pig-o-rama as well.

That's great news about the DFG buying a ranch. It's nice to see it going the other way instead of us losing hunting grounds each year. I can't believe anyone pays up to $12,000 for an elk. They must get a few takers though.

Boy, it looks like we had a JHP event and didn't know it. I was there with Evan III and CSBishop. Nathan was out scouting quail and came by the campground. Frank was out there. And Kickaha and wife were there.

12000 for a bull..... Hm... I think they are having a sale! As unbelievable as it sounds, one of the ranches (I think it might have been the Tejon ranch, actually!) wanted $18000 for a bull Elk.... The time spent requesting and reading the 'brochure' was WELL WORTH the entertainment value!

I too am glad to see that DFG is acquiring a sizable ranch, and that they are going to limit the number of hunters per day and such, to prevent them from getting 'shot out'. I too have been chasing public land pigs for about 5 years now, and been up and down pozo, Carrizo, Monterey district, FHL, etc.

In all honesty, what I would REALLY like to see (which, in my opinion, it will be REALLY GOOD for public land pig hunting) is to impose a season, and maximum number of pigs per year/per hunter (like deer). I know that pigs are supposed to be 'prolific' breaders, and that they can multiply like rats and cause damage to crops, etc....

However, how about this for a solution: A 4 month season for pigs (when they are least likely to be pregnant or nursing), and a maximum of 3 pigs per hunter per year (of course, this is just an example. The figures can be adjusted based on scientific data). Now, this will ONLY apply on public lands. That is, if you want to shoot out 30 pigs in one day, you can, but on private land ONLY. They can leave things be the way they are for private lands, that is no limit (as long as you have tags), and no closed season.

This will 'control' and reduce the population of pigs on 'private land', where some wine and complain about the 'damage' to their crops, etc (but yet, some want to charge $600+ for a pig), and actually PUSH THEM ONTO PUBLIC LAND, as during the 'public land off-hunting-season', there will be A LOT LESS pressure on public lands, than on private lands!

I will create a seperate post, as I'm now curious about what everyone thinks about this!

They do the same thing every year. The Russell Ranch, the Cheminse Ranch, Rancho Rinconda, the Twisselmens, and the Spanish Ranch. All of the cowboys that work for these ranches herd the elk onto these ranches, then charge a trespass fee. Lord it pisses me off. Even though I never ever, ever get drawn for this hunt, it still pisses me off. I've actually seen them do it on the 166 side.

Most people don't relealize that every big game animal that is within California belongs to the state of California. Not the ranch that it resides on. I have thought for years that the state should step in and stop this practice. If you are lucky enough to draw a tag for this hunt you should have access, maybe even for a reasonable fee, to hunt them.

Just my two pennies worth.

p.s. John, that's good to know. It's the Cheminse Ranch that DFG bought. I've been hearing rumors about it. I've seen MONSTER elk on that ranch. It is a great place for all that you mentioned.

It IS ILLEGAL, indeed. By DFG definition, 'take' is defined as killing, attempting to kill, chasing, pursuing, harrassing, etc.... So 'hearding' (without a tag, out of season) would be considered pursuing, harrassing, and chasing.....

However, and sadly, DFG will not do anything about it. This is not the first time that I hear of this either. Some say that the ranchers have the 'local wardens' in their pockets....

A lot of illegal stuff goes on ALL OVER the place, but good luck getting DFG to enforce them. Illegal 'Private Property' signs (have found, reported 3), private ranch night hunting (Coalinga area), etc.
