Hello, I used this forum about a year ago when I was reporting to Camp Pendleton in search of some areas to hunt Pig and Coyote. I was unfortunately unable to do much hunting do to my deployment to the Middle East in support of the War with Iraq. I am now waiting to return home to CA. We don't have a lot to do out here except wait for the plane ride home. After 6 months of being deployed I sure am anxious to get home and finally see what california hunting is like. If you could give me any pointers on hunting in southern california it would be greatly appreciated. I am going to head up to Vandenberg AF or FHL when I get home I here that is a good area to shoot your first pig. Any Ideas?

Well you found the right place. There is alot active duty military, who post here, and me being one of them. I run the hunting and fishing program for camp roberts(military side of things). You have a lot of areas to choose. I think Camp roberts or Vand.AFB will be your best bet. So hope to see you when you get out of the BOX.
Thanks for a great job!!!!!!

Boar Tracks, thanks for the welcome.
What are the steps you need to take to hunt Camp Roberts, Is it easy to access. My only hunt in CA so far has been a weekend at Vandenberg. You have to check in in the morning and at night. Also I here there is some public land adjacent, is this also good hunting? Camp Roberts is a long trip from Camp Pendleton.

Hey Boar Tracks,
Don't you military guys get a discount to hunt FHL? I think you should get in there for free.

USMARINE,

buy your CA hunting license and pig tags, then head on up to VAFB. Once on-base you head over to the Exchange (to the Customer Service counter in the back) and buy your VAFB hunting sticker ($15). Then head over to the on-base Fish and Game office and fill out their paperwork. THEN get out in the field and stay there, you don't need to check in with F&G folks anymore after that.
When I was at VAFB last January I arrived at the Exchange at 0800 when they opened.... before 0900 I was in the field !!

Have A Safe Journey Home and Good Hunting when you get here !!

Hey USMarine:

Thanks for your service overseas! You have made us proud. Wishing you a safe trip home, and good hunting. If you're in San Diego, let me know, and I'll buy the beer.

Hey Marine, when you get to CamPen you're right in the thick of some of the best quail hunting! Base Game unit is on Basilone Rd right near the Vado del Rio bridge (ask any MP).

Sign up and get your base license! Since you're active duty, you also get access to the waterfowl program.

And I've seen a bunch of deer taken there; big ones.

Doves aren't great, but what the heck; openers should be good if you're back by then!

Come home soon and safe.
