Howdy all, I've done a few searches on here and read that there are a few legal & local places to see some hog. So, I'm looking to do some scouting for hog this weekend or at least soon, but no one has given even general info for the areas.

I haven't hunted hog in years and I'm looking for some areas to go look. I really want to just introduce my son to the great outdoors and maybe show him some deer or pig without making a 5 hour drive. This post probally won't get me far, I'm sure no one will give up there info on local legal hog in the area but it's worth a try!

Hey BH, Noone should be flaming you for wanting to do some legwork. As for finding the piggies, you just need to look in the right areas. Around Sbdo and Riv. County, that usually means water. Personally, I've never seen a wild pig in either county. But don't let that stop you from enjoying the outdoors.

Thanks Marty. I'm willing to do alot of legwork as long as its in those two counties. I'm just looking for someone to point me in the general direction, maybe suggest a particular map of the region to keep me out of the private land. I just picked up a 98 Wrangler, so wheelin' some remote, but legal, trails would be great.

Stay in touch.

Good luck - I'd also like to find some local hogs but I don't think there are many. Ask you cousin's bf is there is any public land around San Timeteo Canyon.

there is also Big Horn Canyon Ranch but it's a pay to play fenced place - still might be fun for squeeks.

No boar in CNF.

I was going to do some scouting tomorrow for birds and yotes but If you've got some places in mind I'd be happy to join you.

Also google earth is a pretty good resource for finding off roads and trails.

If you want to hook up let me know.

Thanks George. I'll probally go Sunday if I get some scoop on where to begin looking. I'll let you know Saturday afternoon at the latest.

Ya, Big Horn won't do it for me. I'm cheap and I'm used to real tough fair chase hunting. What's "CNF"?

Here's my new hunting vehicle.

Nice ride
<

My ride is my wife's H3 - only problem is that its her's and she freaks a bit every time I take it out. Oh well. She's gone today and I am probably going back into the San Berd NF just up the street to see if I can grab a couple of dove. Seen plenty over the last month - problem is once their down going in after them through the brush.

CNF is Cleveland National Forrest - I scouted the south half a couple of weeks ago. Saw plenty of dove and a few qual.

I'm aftaid that most of the boar south of Santa Barbara are probably recently escaped and aren't around very long. Although I have read that there are boar in the Santa Ana River. Its such a public area tho' and if any hunting is allowed it would be bow only.

Hey unfortunately Sunday is out for me - I play trumpet in a couple of differnent groups and I have two rehearsels that day.

However I would like to hook up and join forces any other time.

Good luck and keep posting.

Thanks George, I had the same problem with my wifes truck (F150), she would freak if I got a little mud inside or heaven for bid some feathers. Solved that problem a few weeks ago with the Heep and even 5 days after opening day it still is full of mud, blood and feathers.

I wish they would open up the Santa ana river bed, I'd arrow them. I don't think that will ever happen though.

I was out at the Wildomar OHV area a few days ago and saw lots of fat quail on the South Main Divide Road.

My wife wants me to get rid of my older Suburban - battle axe - truck. I took out the newer truck for the dove opener, and had a hard time 'not' babying it over the stutter bumps. It's just not build the same.

As for maps, you need more than one. Use: a Thomas Bros. map for the latest city boundaries, a forest map for navigable roads and hunting spaces, and a BLM map for non-forest public access land. Also, be aware of "SHOTGUN ONLY" zones in the areas of the county you are in possession of a firearm while hunting. The target practice excuse no longer works; since most counties have moved all target shooting to designated areas.

There are a few places in the Riverside County that holds a few hogs on public land. But, be ready to do some leg work. They will be hard to find. As for San Timeteo canyon, if you are talking about the area around the old school house, I was there today dove hunting and was stopped by a Riverside Parks Ranger. It is mostly posted as a Riverside Game Reserve now. Something about a small bird, a small butterfly and a rat that is endangered there????? They have up most of the signs now but are still getting more land so just forget that place. The Santa Ana River basin holds many hogs. Find public access around where it is crossed by the 15 freeway and use archery only. Other than that.....good luck.

Boar Hunter: I talked to Riverside Parks Rangers today and the Santa Ana River is open. Just the areas governed by the flood control district are not. Where it is close to Mt. Rubidoux and the 15 freeway .........and you are right, it is archery only. DFG, when I talked to them said they will run you out if you use a gun as will the Sheriffs, to many homeless living there. If you go, let me know and we can compare notes...

Never fished Canyon Lake, they have trout or mainly just bass? I'm kind of a rookie when it comes to fresh water fishing, but I try my best and enjoy it. Salt water runs through my blood.

A quail shoot would be a kick.

I heard there are tons of porkers down there, but I thought it was a big no-no to be down there hunting. Looks like I need a new bow! Any suggestions on that subject. My old PSE is down for the count (and about 15 years old) so I was looking at a Matthews Drenaline.

When are you available to do some scouting? Shoot me an email.

As for your bow, I have 3 PSE bows, Thunderflite, Mach 8 and a Deer Hunter. Some are old and still work great. "Stick with what you know" is what I always say.

I'll get back to you after archery deer is over.....

Hey guys, I live about a 100 yards from the Santa Ana River bottom in Riverside/Nocro area. I have had a few chats with the head ranger John at Hidden Valley Wildlife Preserve and he has made it quite clear that there is absolutely NO hunting down in that riverbottom. I have asked him jokingly and seriously and he'll tell you with a straight face, NO way. There is just too much liability down there with the bird watchers, swimmers, and horseback riders. Sorry......

Ok... Conflicting reports. Ah
<
!!![/b]

Actually, you can ask for a definite ruling from the local authorities on that. In fact, you can do one better if you do it in writing. And if the answer is in writing, you can bring a copy of that reply with you and show it to every LOE who thinks they have the rules and regulations down pat.

Good luck and let us know.

P.S. -- A friend whacked a pig down there a long time ago. He said there was a group. But they are mostly second generation ferals. Probably escapees from the farms down Norco.

The riverbed is all off limets. The only leagle way is to get written permission to hunt private land that may boarder the area, but you still have to be sure your not in the city limets
