I guess it is true that you will get 10 different rulings from 10 different people or agencies. The route I took was to ask a Riverside Parks Ranger and he indicated it was OK and that there was hogs there (nice guy) but to stay clear of flood control areas, also called Riverside sheriff in the Rubidoux area and the attending deputy also indicated it was OK to hunt but with archery only. Next was the DFG and they also said it was OK to hunt the area as long as all of the proper tags and liciences were in use.

They all did indicate that access had to be obtained from bordering land owners as there is very limited public access. I agree that should be in writting and carried with you.

The next time I do see the Riverside Ranger, I will try to have him give me some sort of written ruling on the place. With all I have been reading, now I am curious..is it or not? But, a buddy of mine says he knows of more access points so I am gonna check them out.

I live near the the river and it is full of hogs, the flood basin is full too. have run into several hogs first thing in the morning training my dogs at prodo and it is legal to shoot a shotgun in thier. They will run you out if the catch you hunting but if you have to protect you your dog from a killer hog, coyote, or mallard as I have and are descret about it no one will say a thing. Fish and game has told me that it is leagal to bow hunt in the river bottom and riverside county has no ordenace against archery and the state of california dose not consider a bow a deadly weapon.

Some of you guys are probably right that there are a few legal areas to hunt down in the basin. Its only my guess( I repeat only my guess) that the area that is specifically off limits to hunting is the area between Jurupa Park/Van Buren to the 15 fwy. That area is under the jurisdiction of the Hidden Valley Wildlife Preserve area. My guess is the closer you get to Chino, the more private and public land you'll encounter. I am planning an organized horseback ride down in Hidden Valley this weekend and I am sure to run into the head ranger there. I will see if he can give me some specifics on the who/what/when/where/and why.......

Hidden Valley is (or was) owned by DFG but they never designated it as a Wildlife Area which could have allowed for hunting. It is leased to Riverside County. The preserve has had hog problems but DFG will not (at least not 8 years ago) issue depredation tags for the area. DFG tried to hold a raffle style hunt and many hunters sent in postcards, but no hunt was held. In the old days hunters would fly in and hunt pheasant up top and then ducks down on the ponds in the canyon. It was a popular spot for the Hollywood sporting crowd. So much for the good old days.
